Summary
Lan Zhan dies two years before canon and promptly wakes up in the library at Cloud Recesses right across from Wei Wuxian, napping facedown in a pile of copywork.
He has a lot of questions. Is this the afterlife? If it's not, then is he alone with his memories? And most importantly, what does he need to do to keep his soulmate alive this time?
Wei Ying did not stir as he knelt down by the desk. It had been so long since Lan Zhan had seen those beloved features and even longer since he’d been allowed to either get or stay this close to Wei Ying.
He looked so different from Lan Zhan’s memories; apple cheeked, clean, and relaxed.
Lan Zhan clamped both hands over his own mouth to stop the pained noise that threatened to escape him. Hot tears spilled down his face as he watched the young, safe, and whole boy sleep. His stomach cramped with the effort of holding the sound in, but he’d sooner die than wake Wei Ying up.

He frowns into the pillow, suddenly aware of the fuzz itching against his lips. "What do you mean?"
"Maybe you're not ready yet," she says, and his heart squeezes. "Maybe it's like—when you were younger. When you'd—try," she says, stumbling around the thing they never talk about, the nights spent in hospital beds, the weeks and months spent in a room not his own, among strangers he was not allowed to know. "But you couldn't. Maybe it's like that."
Wei Ying shifts, curls into himself. "I want this," he says, and means it. "I do—I just." He stops, hesitates, re-routes. "What if getting married changes things?"
Wei Ying's been trying to propose to Lan Zhan for well over a year, but something always seems to get in the way. Coming to terms with what he wants from life and his relationship with Lan Zhan leads him to a very grounding realization.

Lan Zhan leapt forward and broke through a line of trees stepping into a small clearing where he froze, his eyes focusing in on the source of that seductive call, of that delicious scent. There in front of him was not the vixen he expected.
Instead it was a fox, he was sprawled out naked there on his back, his black hair loose around his shoulders, his ears pinned back as he arched his body lewdly off the ground, his shaft hard and dripping against his belly as he rubbed it roughly, his pale skin framed by nine fluffy black tails.
The fox looked at him hazily with some of the most beautiful grey eyes Lan Zhan had ever seen. They were dark and hot under his long lashes, already wet with frustrated tears, his mouth open as he panted huskily. He trailed the tip of his red tongue over his lips as he called out for him, that hoarse voice beckoning him forward and the dragon went willingly, oh how willing he was.
He stripped as he walked, dropping his belt to the grassy forest floor, his white robes falling off his broad shoulders as he stepped closer and closer to that impossibly beautiful man.

“Wei-qianbei, may this disciple speak with you for a moment?” Lan Sizhui called. Wei Wuxian grinned as he spun to see him, though stopped himself from teasing him about the formal way he called him when he saw the serious set of his features. It seemed everyone was very serious today.
“You don’t even need to ask,” he said. Lan Sizhui looked around to make sure they were alone and still took a step closer. He was breaking some rule, Wei Wuxian thought‒impropriety, personal space, secrecy, something. “Is something wrong?”
“It’s Hanguang-Jun,” he said softly. Wei Wuxian was very interested at this point and stepped even closer. “He is… melancholy.”
