For a second, as he watches Phainon's expression change, Mydei wants him to ask. Wants him to press harder, to back him into a corner and pry the answer out of him through bared and bloodied teeth, to make the decision so forcefully that Mydei doesn't have to.
Because there is, it has come to Mydei's attention, a decision.
He can respond to this— by saying nothing. He can, as he inevitably will, as he always intended to do, carry his mortality to his grave and bury it, leaving the figure of immortal, invulnerable Mydeimos untouched until the very end.

If not for the thunder of armored boots in the streets, shouting traitor, apostate, Kristen’s eyes hardening under the moonlight, the feeling of something irreplaceable splitting and crumbling for good between her fingers.
She clenches her hands into fists. Riz was wrong, for once. She’s never been good at making people stay. “You were wrong,” she repeats. “And maybe now you can wonder if you could’ve saved us, for a change.”

“—Who is currently dead.” Kristen says abruptly.
Kalina’s fur bristles. “If they were dead,” she growls, “you wouldn’t be able to cast spells now, would you?”
There’s a beat of silence where Kalina breathes, smoothing her panic back down. Regardless of what the little Cleric thinks she did, Kalina is alive. She has a form again. She can work with this. Her Goddess is not dead.
She swears it. Her Goddess is not dead.

“Why?” he says. Amanai’s greasy little fingers had left a smudge on one of the lenses. He brings the glasses down to wipe it on his clothes and winces as the light hits his eyes again. “Your curses will wake you up if something happens. What are you, a masochist? Wanna do it for fun?”
“No,” Suguru mutters. “You might be though.” Satoru sticks out his tongue at the mirror.

“Fontaine doesn’t need a Chief Justice who’s half-dead on his feet,” Wriothesley says.
He says it lightly, like a friendly jibe, but today the sunlight drives spikes into Neuvillette’s skull and his joints feel like sandpaper and he finds himself lacking the patience for friendly jibes.
“I am not shirking my duties,” Neuvillette says, something slow-moving like anger rumbling to life within him.
“No,” Wriothesley says, glancing at him. “But you’re not really doing them either, are you.”
