When the Ministry informs Harry that they are coming to destroy his wand for defending himself from the dementors that attack him in Little Whinging, Harry knows there's only one path left available to him. He can survive on his own. He knows how. It won't even be that hard. And being on the run in his animagus form makes him a feel a little closer to Sirius, anyway.
At least, he thinks so, until he's picked up by a pet store, sold to a classmate, and brought right back to Hogwarts where the state of things is so bad that he's actually glad he's expelled.

Summary
“I’m just gonna test something,” Tommy reaches up slowly, gently placing his palm against the side of Dream’s neck. He rubs his thumb over Dream’s jaw, who stills completely.
He can’t speak. Can’t say anything. Not as Tommy looks back up at his mask, eyes questioning. Not as he leans forward, pressing a soft kiss to Dream’s lips.
Dream's mind comes to a stuttering halt.
Tommy pulls back, looking up at Dream, still with that question in his eyes.
Dream’s mind comes back online a beat later, and he yanks Tommy down for another kiss. Tommy pushes Dream away with a startled laugh.
“You– Jesus, Dream. It’s just a potion. You had me worried there, for a second.”
“...What?” Dream asks, still staring at Tommy’s lips.
“I figured out how to make love potions,” Tommy says with a grin. “I was worried you were a psychopath when you said you didn’t feel different. But I guess you’re capable of love after all, huh?”
Or; Dream takes an experimental potion from Tommy's things in Pogtopia. He needs to keep Tommy from finding out why it didn't do anything to him. He fails, in the best way possible.
