Sometimes Cass’ little brother's chest would split open. It would break along the lines of the Y-shaped scar and crack like fault lines in an earthquake.
Cass swore she could see the thing that emerged from him. The ghost of a boy barely fifteen. He wore the shadow of an ecstatic smile on his lips and a torn and bloody Robin suit. He would drag himself out like an insect shedding its skin and drop, all broken bones and pulverized flesh, onto the floor. Not human anymore, just the chewed-up and spat-out remains.
Jason would watch the child he once was with distant eyes. Watch the corpse of himself as it pulled itself up on bent and broken limbs and stared back.
