“Hello, miss,” he started with an uncharacteristic shyness. He rubbed at the back of his neck, averting his eyes from her own. “I was wondering if I could ask a favor.”
The woman raised a perfectly-manicured eyebrow. In the three months since she had become an official part of the Dead Boy Detective Agency, the Night Nurse hadn’t grown even the slightest bit more approachable.
“That depends very much on what that favor would be.” Her eyes narrowed. “If this is about calling me Charlie, the answer is still no.”
Charles laughed softly, but there was no real humor to it. “No, it’s not. I, um…” He took a deep breath, articulating each word as if they had to be drawn from his mouth one-by-one. “I was wondering if you could do your memory-trauma magic thing. On me.”
