Brown crouched down. “Hello, beautiful. I’m Brown. We’re going to be partners.”
Bulbasaur narrowed his eyes.
“You were the only one left,” Oak offered helpfully.
“Don’t listen to him,” Brown said quickly, as if the Pokémon understood social nuance. “Despite the illusion of you being the last available option—and thus my Pokémon by default—you were, in fact, my first choice.”
Bulbasaur’s left vine twitched.
“We’re going to forge a bond of trust and respect,” Brown continued, holding out a hand with slow ceremony. “You and me, from here to Indigo Plateau. A journey of strength. Of growth. Of mutual understanding—”
CRACK.
The vine whipped out and slapped him clean across the face.
Brown staggered back, eyes watering, lips still curved in delight. “Oh my god. You learned Vine Whip. I’m so happy~!”
Oak looked vaguely horrified.
