“You can do me a favor,” Nice says, smiling, “pick up your chair, and straighten up your desk while you’re at it. Keyboard, mouse, that cup of pens that apparently only exists for you to chew on — throw those out, actually, that’s disgusting. I can’t do it myself and it’s making my skin crawl.” He sighs, rolls his eyes. “You’d think being dead would at least mean the OCD isn’t a factor, but I guess the only real perk is not being alive.”
He says it so casually, so cavalier — like what can you do? — that Lin Ling briefly wonders if he’s insane for having such a strong reaction to Nice’s apparent death.
Oh, god. Dead. Nice is dead.
Lin Ling stares at Nice. Nice smiles back, hollow eyed and no less smug for it.

Luo’s laughter carries over the ringing in her ears as she flips over onto her back and huffs a frizzy stand of hair out of her face. She’s got grass stains on her shirt, on her shorts, and probably on her teeth at this point. Dirt in her hair and under her nails from scrabbling for purchase while doing a very unfortunately-timed split. The roller skates, at least, have been thoroughly broken in, and the blisters on her heels will heal in a few days.
And of course Luo’s totally unscathed. He learned how to skate ages ago, according to him. It feels like he’s cheating somehow — like for once his bad luck is outpacing her own freakishly good fortune.
Cyan doesn’t think she’s ever been this happy in her life.

The concept of fated mates wasn’t lost on Lin Ling. He knew they were something that happened, that sometimes couples are so perfect for each other that the draw they feel towards one another was so strong they couldn’t be with anyone else. Lin Ling didn’t ever think the concept would apply to him. After all, he had never met anyone who had a fated mate, to Lin Ling they might as well be myths.
