REQUIREMENTS: Senior enrollment. Grades above 3.75 GPA. At least 75 hit points
DESCRIPTION: Learn to survive, evade, resist, and escape. The professor will teach you how to make it through harsh combat, high level spellcasting, and unique forms of torture. By the end of the semester, you will be able to withstand hardship, escape captivity, hold up under interrogation, and push through any brutality enacted upon you. Grades dependent on tenacity under pressure, perseverance in the face of challenges, and survival through it all.

“I'm trying to surprise you,” Fabian says, a smile still marking his face, though it’s lost some of its confidence and bravado. Now, he looks like he’s realizing he maybe took a step too far without noticing that the ground wasn’t underneath his feet any longer.
Riz balls his hands up in tightly clenched fists. “You know how I feel about surprises,” he repeats himself, echoing the Riz who said those words just a few weeks ago. He can’t believe Fabian is still on this, whatever ‘this’ is. He hoped it was a passing urge, something that would come and go without Riz actually being caught off guard by some huge, unexpected gesture. But here he is, face-to-face with what seems like a huge, unexpected gesture.
“This is a good one, The Ball. I promise. Sit down, please,” he says, nodding to the foot of the bed. “Have you heard of a Soul Life Bond?”

or: Fabian hears about a ritual that could change the course of his life forever. Riz isn't so sure about it.

“Her choice?” He asks, suddenly filled with rage. “She has to choose between her brothers?”
“From what I hear, Miss Applebees here, sweetheart that she is, has a problem with taking responsibility for things. She has a hard time stepping forward and making the tough calls. If she wants to prove herself to be more than a fickle, indecisive girl, she’ll have to make this impossible choice and live with the consequences. That is her challenge. Not yours.”
Kristen remains frozen, arms held out in front of her loosely. She looks like she wants to dig—her fingertips move, nervously twitching—but she doesn’t touch the earth. She doesn’t even blink as the words wash over her.

or: A mysterious figure entraps Kristen and Riz in an Aguefort classroom and presents them with a game of moral quandaries, complete with life-or-death consequences.

“That’s not what we are to each other,” Fabian protests. His hands grip into tight fists, pretending to be brave in front of this visage of fear itself. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You killed me. You see, I lived in Riz Gukgak’s head. I’m his. When you changed his head, whispered sweet words to him, you wiped me away, Fabian Aramais Seacaster. You erased me. My romance partner is no longer afraid, not the way he used to be, which means I can no longer feed on him,” Baron smiles, his wide black grin coming to life as he steps out of the shadow and into the light. “And I’m very, very hungry.”

Summary
Riz hates to admit it, but he is. He’s very curious about how his life might look if things were slightly different. He knows he’s a chronic overthinker, a worrier, who has spent far too many hours in his life asking himself, “what if?” This is an opportunity to receive an answer to that question.

Is it the right time? Would a threat be out of proportion to the crime? Riz can’t decide. He feels his thoughts swirl. He’s doing the right thing, he is. The moral thing. He’s helping his mom, that’s all there is to it. He would threaten someone for her; hell, he’d do a lot more than that. And that doesn’t make him a bad person. He’s doing it for the greater good. For her good. He’s doing it because he sees something wrong with the world and he has the ability to fix it.
So he must. It’s his responsibility. He’ll step up to the plate even if no one else is playing ball.

or: Riz begins to lose sight of the ethics of his actions but his sense of justice grows and grows.

Summary
All six children made a mistake, in that early morning hour, before the sun had even risen. They stumbled, half-asleep through these portals into the Shadowfell, a dimension that does not let go of its inhabitants easily. These six children fell into the upside-down world beneath the Material Plane without even knowing that they should be afraid of what they found.
Soon, though, they will find out that the Shadowfell requires a healthy dose of fear to navigate. Soon, they will understand that clever children do not follow messengers into unknown planes.
Soon. But not quite yet.

“You wish things were different,” the voice he heard at Fabian’s place purrs. “I can help with that.”
“Who are you?” Riz asks aloud as he lets himself into his empty apartment. “What are you talking about?”
“I’m no one in particular. And I’m speaking on the what-ifs that you’re pondering. ‘What if things were different? What if my life was better than it is now? What if?’”
“Yeah, yeah, wouldn’t that be nice?”

“No magic?” Adaine asks.
“How is that even possible?” Kristen tilts her head to the side curiously. “Is it?”
“Planeswalking without magic? There’s no way.” Fabian’s eyebrows pinch together tightly. He frowns. “Right?”
Riz can’t speak. He hears Aguefort’s words replaying in his head, over and over. If you use magic, you will fail. If you use magic, you will fail. You will fail.

Summary
On the fifth day of the apocalypse, Kristen tripped. She’d done it before and, in a different world, she would do it again, but in this world, it was the last time she’d ever trip. It was the last time she’d ever do anything in her own right mind, in fact.
She was bitten in the juncture of her throat and shoulder, so, so close to the brain. Close enough that she began to turn immediately.
Riz knew what he was supposed to do and he had the weapon to do it in hand. A single shot through the brain or the heart. He could take his pick.
He didn’t, though. He picked a third option.

Quick like a whip, Riz’s hand intercepts his.
Fabian gasps.
The place where Riz touches his hand feels freezing cold, each fingertip like an ice cube on a sunburn. Fabian leans into the touch, pressing the palm of his hand against Riz’s wrist.
“Don’t use those,” Riz says, pulling his hand away from Fabian’s. Fabian feels like something was just stolen from him. His mouth falls open, but he doesn’t know what to say. How does he explain what he just felt? I’m burning up and you’re icy cold. Please, don’t pull away. Fabian shakes his head, trying to knock loose the strange feeling in his mind.

“You’re tired," Kristen declares.
Riz grits his teeth. “So what if I am?” He bites back. “Everyone’s a little tired.”
“You’re not a little tired, dude. You’re, like… like, ancient dragon taking a nap on his hoard of gold coins tired. You look like you’re a thousand years old,” she declares. “I mean, check out the bags under your eyes.”
Riz drops his head on the bar, hiding his face in the pillow of his arms. “You’re being rude, Kristen.”

Riz swallows, suddenly feeling nauseous. He gets a sinking feeling in his stomach like he used to in grade school when everyone was talking about something he couldn’t quite understand. He feels like he’s three steps behind, begging, desperately, to get in on the joke.

Fabian sighs. “Exactly the problem, The Ball. The fact that you don’t know how to take a break is the exact reason why you need one. You get that, right? You can logically get that?”

or: Fabian convinces Riz to take a vacation, a break from the stresses of the sea, at a resort island known as the Haven. The crew all-too-easily falls into the temptations of the island while Riz wonders how, exactly, one is meant to relax.

“There is, as you know, an auditorium on campus that holds a video recording of the events in the Arena for paid ticket holders to watch. Parents and students will be in the audience so do be careful how you act in there if you don’t want to be judged for it. Or,” Aguefort smiles, a flash of white, “show the others just how bloodthirsty you can be. I’ll bet that the upperclassman won’t be as quick to bully some of you little weaklings if they see you draw blood a few dozen times, yes?”
“And the sponsorships?” Adaine asks, throwing her hand in the air. “They can pay for things to help us, right?”
“Yes, yes, this is, above all else, a fundraiser,” Aguefort says and Riz frowns. He thought this was, above all else, a chance for him to raise his GPA in the last few moments of sophomore year. “If your friends, family, et cetera, want to sponsor you, they can spend real gold to send you real weapons, tools, supplies, anything! Though it won’t be cheap so don’t expect much.”

or: Aguefort Adventuring Academy puts all one hundred and twenty five sophomores in an arena to fight in a deadly tournament. The parents are forced to watch what their kids go through at school.

Fabian launches himself to his feet and takes a dangerous step towards her. He can feel the anger that crawls up his throat, begging to be let out in an explosion of sound. He tries to fight it, he does, but Riz is dead which means that every bit of calm that he once held in his body is dead, too. “My first mate is dead, his soul shattered, and you’re calling this the best case scenario?” He spits the words, taking another step towards Trinity.

Summary
Riz rubs at the bridge of his nose. “Fine,” he acquiesces. “Open the cursed book. Go nuts.” He holds his breath, preparing for another cloud of arcane dust to choke him but, as Fig flips the cover open, nothing emerges at all. She’s left looking at intricate illustrations of fairy tales. Little girls in red cloaks, trolls standing under bridges, and beautiful fairies wearing halos of flowers on their heads.
It’s a storybook, Adaine signs.
“What’s so dangerous about a storybook?” Fabian asks.

More concerning, though, then the smell or the taste, is the rag that’s pressed over his nose and lips from which this smell emanates.
Fuck, Riz thinks. Then, as his brain turns to static and the sounds of the city become muffled, he thinks, I always wondered what it would feel like to be chloroformed.

or: Riz is captured by a crime syndicate that he gets too close to during an investigation and his punishment is more insidious than simple imprisonment. The other Bad Kids are forced to follow a trail of clues to try to save him.

“Five percent is already so much to lose, The Ball.” Fabian’s voice is tight. Even his posture is losing its performative nonchalance as his muscles all tighten.
“What, am I not enough for you anymore?” Riz tries to joke.
“Don’t say that!” Fabian’s words snap at him like an alligator’s jaws. Riz flinches. He nails Fabian with a sharp look. “Sorry,” he goes on. “Just… just don’t even joke, okay? I don’t want you to think that I’m some fair-weather captain who’ll abandon you because you’re not the same as you used to be.”

or: Riz finally contends with the fact that he's lost five percent of himself, permanently. Through the process, he opens up to Fabian about a few things.

Fabian chuckles and throws a Faerie Fire at him before he disappears into the dark sea. Riz glows ever so slightly and Fabian takes off, pursuing that glow.
He chases after Riz, lets Riz feel like he’s winning, then pushes himself, knowing he’ll blow past Riz easily. A moment before he would overtake Riz, though, Fabian notices that Riz’s limbs, once carving through the waves, propelling him forward, still.
He begins to sink.
