Summary
Sklonda Gukgak wakes up to the sound of Riz’s old-fashioned alarm clock, just like she has for the past thirty days, on the morning of October 13th. A Tuesday. An endless Tuesday. She has been living this same Tuesday for weeks and weeks, wondering if she’ll ever see November.
“Kid,” Sklonda calls out, knocking on the shared wall between their rooms. “Time to get up. You’ve got school.”
Except, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if Riz makes it to school today because he’ll never make it to tomorrow. That’s the only thing she knows for sure. No matter what either of them do, Riz does not make it to Wednesday, October 14th.

It doesn’t even have Fabian or Fig which is tough. I knew it would be hard to split the party after high school but I really hoped that if I held on tight enough, I could keep us together. I mean I have Gorgug. And Adaine’s not far off, either. I can walk to her place from campus. But Kristen, I only see on weekends and I can’t remember the last time I saw Fig or Fabian. I miss them.
I miss you more. Don’t tell them that.

Summary
“Good to see you at school, then,” Jawbone smiles. “And good to see you taking some time out of your day to talk about how you’ve been doing.”
Not by choice, Riz thinks. After Aguefort’s ill-advised final exam for the sophomores in which everyone was trapped in their own personal time loop, the staff at the Aguefort Adventuring Academy found that students were struggling. Fights were breaking out, grades were slipping, and moods were poor. Someone suggested mandatory therapy sessions with the school counselor and now, here Riz is, sinking into an uncomfortable couch and being forced to talk about his feelings.

Summary
On the fifth day of the apocalypse, Kristen tripped. She’d done it before and, in a different world, she would do it again, but in this world, it was the last time she’d ever trip. It was the last time she’d ever do anything in her own right mind, in fact.
She was bitten in the juncture of her throat and shoulder, so, so close to the brain. Close enough that she began to turn immediately.
Riz knew what he was supposed to do and he had the weapon to do it in hand. A single shot through the brain or the heart. He could take his pick.
He didn’t, though. He picked a third option.

“Why am I casting this?” Kristen asks, already having sent the magic through the air. It forms a light cloud over Riz’s tray and sparkles with dusty purple light. “Should I worry about my own food?” She keeps chewing her bread roll slowly.
Riz furrows his brow. “You should always be worried. We all should. Any one of us could be poisoned at any time; we need to stay on guard.”

Summary
The puppy Blinks again, reappearing just behind Riz. He whips around to keep his eyes on it, worried that this will turn into another chase. The puppy doesn’t try to run, though, stepping closer to Riz instead until it’s practically standing on top of him. It lets out a tiny whimper.
“Woah, hey, it’s okay, little bud. I’ll just,” Riz kneels on the ground and pets the puppy’s head, “call your owner, how about that?” With his free hand, he pulls his crystal out of his pocket and redials the most recent call. “He’ll be here in no time at all. But you gotta stop running away, bud. I bet he’s really worried.”

“I can’t really tell but, uh, I’m pretty sure I’m in a coffin.” Ragged gasps are all that make it through the crystals for a moment. “You’re okay, though?”

Summary
Fabian kneels by Kristen, trying to shake her awake. Riz knows they need her up. They're helpless without her.
In the seconds it takes her to wake up, Riz promises himself he'll never feel this useless in battle again. All he can see are flashes of his friends' unconscious bodies in his head. How many more times will he be in this position? What if next time they’re not able to wake Kristen up?
He signs up for First Aid 101 the next morning.

Fabian jogs over to Riz and checks him for injuries. He’s fine, if a little bruised, so he lets Fabian pull him to his feet.
The crack sounds again and, this time, Riz can tell that it’s coming from the mountain. “Fuck,” he curses under his breath. “It’s an avalanche.” His heart stops. They’re standing at the base of a mountain that’s about to pour all of its snow down onto their heads. He sees cracks form on the snow on the side of the mountain and his heart leaps into his throat. They’re dead. They’re both dead.

He shuts his eye and takes a deep breath. He hates lying to Riz like this but he has to protect him. He needs to get Riz out of the picture as quickly and silently as possible and, unfortunately, this was the only way he could think to do so.
