When Eddie gets somewhat unsettling and mysterious news from home, he flies to El Paso to support his little sister in a rather tricky and unfortunate situation. The circumstances don't just bring her own complicated story to light but also make Eddie reveal something about himself that he hadn't planned on sharing.
Slightly angsty but also heart-warming family drama with Buddie endgame.

Still panting he looked around and saw he stood in front of a military recruitment building. He knew Shannon would hate him, his child would never forgive him, and Abuela would be the only one to come and say goodbye, but at least he could provide for his child no matter what. He could leave the compressive, oppressive heat which El Paso had morphed into. He stepped inside.

Eddie never made his son drink from a juice box if he didn’t want. He did, in fact, go through a lot of paper towels. He mopped their floor a lot. He was reading blogs by people with CP, adults, some who worked for places like the NCIL, some who didn’t. He wouldn’t admit it to anyone, but at first he’d sought these people out due to sheer terror of raising a disabled kid all alone. His son had needs and he didn’t know how to help him. He was met with funny jokes about falling, stickered up and bedazzled mobility aids, adults who made their own choices but mostly that they lived. They had Instagram feeds filled with food, selfies, and jokes, favorite sports teams. They wrote blogs of their own. Some wrote books. It’s going to be okay, they all seemed to say to him. He’s going to be okay.

Sometimes Rico feels like there are two versions of himself. There’s the version that’s pretty happy, likes skateboarding and music and video games. Then there’s the other version, who’s always angry, irritation simmering under the surface all the time, making him say shit or do shit that pisses people off.
He wishes he could shed it like a second skin, leave a hollow, desiccated, angry Rico behind and walk away lighter, freer. Most days that feels pretty impossible because which version of him is the real one anyway.

"Wait" Buck shoves Eddie back a step by his hips. Eddie lets him, expression startled. It takes Buck several long seconds to work through the sequence of 1) Eddie was having a panic attack, 2) Eddie kissed him, and 3) Eddie is no longer panicking. The first thing that slips out of his mouth (tingling, lips still slick from Eddie's tongue) is "I didn't know kissing stopped panic attacks."

So everything was okay. Eddie was going to Texas. No, he was going to his son. Christopher was the only thing on his mind. His son was the only thing on his mind.
That was what made it all the more confusing when Buck drove Eddie to the airport and when he hugged Eddie goodbye, standing outside the doors of terminal 4 at LAX, Eddie could not imagine why his first thought was please don’t say it.
Eddie wasn’t even entirely sure what he didn’t want Buck to say, but he knew, deep down to his core, that he did not want Buck to say it. There wasn’t something that Buck could say that would have Eddie falling to his knees outside of terminal 4, and Eddie really didn’t have time for that right now.
...
Eddie goes to El Paso. Buck stays behind. Neither of them say what they should.

Summary
Buck comes to visit when Eddie has been in El Paso three and a half months.
It’s not like they’ve not been in touch. They text everyday, facetime nearly as often; Buck sending an ongoing running commentary of what’s happening at the 118, Eddie responding with updates on Chris. Eddie’s texts are more hopeful than he really feels, Buck’s are too cheerful.
Things are fine in El Paso. They’re just not where Eddie hoped they’d be after nearly four months; Chris still distant, his parents obstructive, Eddie not quite arrived, one foot still in LA and no closer to a true reconciliation with his son.

A visit to El Paso, difficult conversations, breaking old cycles and happy ever after.

The callers ID gave Eddie whiplash. It had been a month since he had left LA, leaving behind his job, his friends, his home; trading it all in for the streets of El Paso in a desperate attempt to do what he had thought best for his son.He hesitated as he stared at his phone screen. It was taunting him. A direct link to LA back on his screen and he didn’t know if he was ready to face it. He hadn’t been good at that, keeping in touch. It was all too painful. Everyone tried and Eddie often used excuse after excuse; he was too busy, Chris needed help with his homework, he was working- But Bobby hadn’t called him since he moved and he must be calling him for a reason. Eddie didn’t know what it was, but it must be important. Before the call could go to voicemail, Eddie swiped to answer the call.
“Bobby? Is everything okay?”
“Eddie? I know you’re all the way in Texas, but-“ There seemed to be a hesitation on the other end of the line, as if Bobby didn’t want to say what was wrong.
“It’s Buck.”

Buck can hear raised voices. Chris looks stricken.
“She’s realised that I’m talking to you. Oh she’s really angry. Buck? Can you stick around. And put yourself on mute. I’m just gonna.”
Chris flips the camera so Buck can see the room instead of Chris’ face. Chris opens his bedroom door slightly and holds his phone to the gap. Eddie fills the screen. He’s in a black tank top, similar to the one he was wearing the day Buck met him. His hair is damp. His mouth is curled in irritation. He’s looking across the room, probably at Helena. It dawns on Buck that Eddie and Helena don’t know that Chris is watching, that he is watching.

“You okay, Christopher?” Buck asks when Christopher hasn’t said a single word since getting out of the car.
“Yeah,” Christopher says, not taking his eyes off the view. “I just feel so…small.”
Buck and Eddie exchange a quick glance.
“In a good way or a bad way?” Eddie asks.
“Good, I think,” Christopher whispers, reaching for both of their hands.
“It’s a little overwhelming, isn’t it?” Buck asks, and both Christopher and Eddie nod.
Eddie kneels down on one knee and wraps both of his arms around his son, squeezing him tightly. He’s so much taller than Eddie when he does this now, almost a full head, and still growing like a weed.
“I love you so much,” he murmurs, “and I’m so glad we’re here together.”
“Me too,” Christopher says, tugging on Buck’s hand that he’s still holding onto, the other arm wrapped around Eddie’s neck. “All three of us.”
Eddie looks up at Buck, who’s watching them with so much warmth in his eyes it takes Eddie’s breath away a little.
“Yeah,” he manages to get out, still looking at Buck, who’s smiling now.~

“Got the last of your stuff here, man.” Eddie’s voice was light as he rounded the corner into the living room with a fresh box in his arm. Bucks, it read, in black marker pen.
“There was that much?” Buck tucked his phone away. He had been trying to sneak his things into the trash as he found them, terrified of the prospect of having to try and shove them back into his life at the loft. Eddie had insisted on clearing his own bedroom though.
“Not a lot, just some old sweatshirts, a couple of books. You done in here?” Eddie stepped into the fading golden daylight that striped across the living room from the half-closed blinds.
Buck tried not to sigh as he nodded.
“Beer?” Eddie asked, passing him.
Buck nodded again. as he settled into the couch, his bones creaking. This will be the last thing they take, he thought. My second bed. There was a poem in high school, he didn’t pay attention—something about a second-best bed. It was romantic, maybe? He mulled it over as he spun the beer bottle Eddie handed him between his fingers.
“You nervous?” he asked, just to fill the silence.
Eddie sat down beside him; “Yeah.”

“Do you love Buck?” Chris asks as dad turns to take the plates to the sink.
He stumbles a step, then keeps going. “Of course I do,” he answers lightly. And Chris knows he’s misunderstood the question entirely.
Chris shakes his head. “No, I mean, do you love Buck?”
Dad freezes. He very carefully sets the plates in the sink and turns around to face him, crossing his arms. “What do you mean?”
Chris blinks. “It’s okay if you do.”
Dads jaw clenches, and his gaze darts away. “Chris—“
“I think he loves you, too.”
His gaze snaps back around. “What?”
Chris shrugs, pushing his chair back. “Something to think about.” And then he grabs his crutches and stands from the table, smiling brightly at dad, before turning and heading for his room.

Buck doesn’t believe he was ever meant to hear the words. He did though, and he wishes that he could change that fact. Because when he was hearing them, he felt like his chest was caving in, as if Eddie had physically hit him in the chest instead of feeding the potential renter what they wanted to hear.
“No ties here, everything that matters is in Texas.”
It rings in his ears over and over again. His mind is taunting him, not allowing him to just let it go. Buck feels childish, he feels exhausting. It’s ridiculous and he’s even aware of it, and he thinks that being aware of it makes it so much worse.
But then Chris calls Buck and says he wants to come stay with Buck. So those words get put on the back burner.

He broke Buck’s heart.
He knows it. Knows it like he knows the weight of his own turnout gear, like he knows the precise way to steady himself when the ground gives way beneath him. It’s a fact, a simple and devastating truth that follows him everywhere, no matter how much distance he puts between them.
What happened in that bathroom, Buck pushing him against the door, kissing him like it was the only way to make sure it had been real, that wasn’t some desperate attempt to get Eddie to come back. It wasn’t even about convincing Eddie to be with him, not really. It was Buck needing to know, to feel it, to confirm that Eddie had been there, that Eddie had wanted it, that it hadn’t all been some fever dream conjured up by his hopelessly romantic, self destructive heart.
And, maybe, just a little, it was about hurting Eddie because Eddie hurt him first. Which, God, isn’t that just heartbreaking?
Or; Eddie and Buck have sex the night before he moves back to El Paso for good.
Each chapter follows a year in Eddie’s life as he makes his way back to Buck.
