It starts with the death of King Itham of Fallinel. Riz's abduction by the Court of Stars would've been a non-starter if it hadn't been revealed that he was the last of the king's line after his father's sisters refused the throne. Someone should've warned the Court of Stars the consequences of taking one of their own. It's a no holds barred rescue mission and if the Bad Kids have to dismantle the Court of Stars, so be it.
But it won't end there. The Shadow Cat is manipulating events from the shadows and it's up to the Bad Kids to find out what's rotten in the material plane, no matter the cost. -

He wants to be wanted. He wants to bask in however Fabian wants to express his love the same way that he’s always loved it when Fabian expresses his love. “No hug?” Sklonda asks with a raised eyebrow. “No coffee? No snooping around my office? I’d think my own son hates me.”

After one of the more painful minutes of Fig’s life, the door creaked open and Jawbone asked “What the hell happened to the lights?” The answering shout was ten different variations on the word surprise—Fig was pretty sure Aelwyn yelled “We got you, you fool!”—no matter how many times they’d practiced yelling it in unison. At least Adaine remembered to drop the darkness and nobody thought they were getting attacked, which had been a legitimate concern given everyone at Mordred’s track record.
It was all very bright, and very loud, and Fig watched Jawbone make exactly the face he’d always wanted to make except more genuine, and she surprised herself by starting to cry. Sandra Lynn got to Fig before she’d decided whether or not to brave the crowd and go see Jawbone herself.
“You cried at your sixth birthday party, too,” she said, and laughed at the middle finger Fig put up in response. “Okay, I’ll stop pointing out that you have feelings.”

Fig presented the contract with a flourish. “Alright! Everybody sign the fancy contract!” She passed the paper and pencil down. “Fabian and Riz must convincingly fake-date for one month without revealing that it’s fake or bailing out of the challenge. Then, they will dramatically break up. If they can successfully do this, Adaine, Gorgug, Kristen and I will receive our punishments. If they don’t, they get their punishments.”
“I can’t believe I’m getting roped into this somehow,” Riz said as he put his signature in. “I don’t know how I got to this point in my life and I want to know how to stop it from ever happening again.”
After a series of escalating events, Fabian and Riz find themselves in a bet with the other Bad Kids to prove they can convince the school they're dating for a month. It's stupid, childish, and a lot of fun. Riz is freshly out of a sexuality crisis and does not need another one, thank you very much. And Fabian is fascinated by the whole thing, but he's one hundred percent, extremely aware that the fake relationship is just that: fake. Clearly, nothing can go wrong.
