Summary
Hawkins has been put in a complete lockdown following the infiltration of One through the bleeding of the Upside Down into the Rightside Up - while the train of Mike’s thoughts have been unleashed ferociously upon himself. Confusing thoughts and ideas - especially involving that of his best friend, girlfriend, and a particular painting - have pushed him somewhat distant from Will Byers and the others in the party. Through the months of quarantine, however, he attempts to strengthen the bond he shares with his first ever companion in order to protect him and the fate of the world from the grasp of Vecna - all the while navigating the halls, academics, and heartbreaks of his hectic junior year of high school.

1987 went to shit. Vecna brought on what may well be the apocalypse, and Steve fought it to the end. Literally.
Death was supposed to be a one-way street. But knowing a girl with super powers had a tendency to change the game. So when Steve opens his eyes to a beer-soaked bathroom on Halloween in 1984, Nancy calling him 'bullshit' all over again, the universe might forgive Steve for thinking he was either a) in Hell or b) going cracked. But Steve didn't have time to freakout. Not when El finds him and asks that he help her change the events of the future. Not when he's the only other person she managed to drag with her for chance number two.
OR: A time travel fix-it, where 1987 Steve is dropped back into his 1984 self. And now he has to deal with that plus the impending apocalypse on the horizon. But he'll be fine, right? Because, as El informs whoever asks, Steve's 'The Babysitter'. So he gets to work. He can cry later, when he's done.

Summary
The calendar said October 31st, a date that should have been a screaming, celebratory fanfare in Hawkins, Indiana. Instead, the air, heavy with the scent of wet leaves and forgotten woodsmoke, was bitterly cold, and the graveyard was silent.
It was a silence that grated on Steve Harrington’s nerves, a silence that felt too small, too quiet, too clean for the whirlwind that was Eddie Munson.

The party, who are now college students, reunite to search for him. The search doesn't seem to bring them any closer to Will, and they are running out of time. In the meanwhile Holly Wheeler goes missing too. Everyone fears the worst - that the gate has opened again - but what they don't know is that Will is no longer a helpless victim of the Upside Down.
While the rest of the party moved on and forgot once the gate closed Will kept exploring, and the connection he formed to the other dimension it actually a lot more complex than what they originally thought.
