Well... Neither do Bucky and Sam not see each other again after their encounter with the Flagsmashers, nor do they go on vacation separately.
When canceled flights all around the world force Sam and Bucky to stay in Greece for a while longer after a successful mission there, the two of them decide to make the most of it and simply go on vacation. Of course this includes the usual activities you can do on vacation like going swimming, sightseeing and simply enjoying each others company, but it also brings Bucky and Sam closer to the realisation that maybe... just maybe... there might be something more than friendship between them. -

If there's one thing he's learned, it's that he can't expect *anything* to be the same. But somehow, he keeps doing just that. When he realizes he has feelings for his new partner-in-crime ("It is crime," he has to keep explaining to people. "This is technically vigilantism. It's illegal."), he's confident that if there's one thing that'll be the same, it will be that a man loving another man is "unnatural."
Apparently, he's wrong about that one, too.

At first, Bucky had thought it was an accident, the guy serving him must not have heard him right. But then it had continued, getting more ridiculous every time he set foot in the place. Bucky didn’t know how to handle it.
This morning when he went for his therapeutic coffee, he had turned his cup to read ‘Borky’ written on it. Last week it had been Becky, the week before it had been Burky. He narrowed his eyes at the guy serving him, the dark-skinned man was looking back at him with an innocent warm smile, oh it definitely wasn’t an accident. Bucky was sure the guy didn’t know who he was, nobody in their right mind would try to play this trick on the Winter Soldier.
But as he walked out of the Starbucks with his coffee in hand, Bucky was surprised to notice that in his anticipation to see what ridiculous name the man could come up with this time, a heavy weight had been lifted off his shoulders. -

but steve wasn't happy. where bucky had let go, steve had clung to the past like a lifeline. before bucky could take another breath, he left him. steve had lost him five times before, but this was the one time that bucky lost him.

“Yeah.” Steve sits up straighter. “What’s wrong with him?” He shakes his head at his choice of words. “I mean, why’s he sick? What…?”
“Well, you probably need a doctor to know for sure-for sure.” Sam smiles sadly. “But… You know about depression, right? Anxiety? Stress?”
“Yeah,” Steve says again, slowly and stupidly. “I mean, I haven’t discussed them in detail, but I’ve read pamphlets.”
“Geez, sometimes I think SHIELD is worse than a high school guidance counselor.” Sam laughs. “Long story short, they wreck a person. Badly.”
