The Regal Copper Laurentius accidentally acquires a captain, Tharkay spectates, Temeraire is Not Actually an Orphan, and no one really knows who's leading France. Someone should probably get on that, considering England is at war with the place.

    Summary

“No,” Laurence said, but his voice was belated and weak. He attempted to stand from where he had been kneeling beside Temeraire, but his knees buckled beneath him as he fell with a low groan, and Tharkay was forced to grab his arm to keep him upright.

For a moment, Granby attributed it to nothing more than exhaustion and having knelt so long in the Russian chill, then Tharkay said suddenly, sharply, “Will,” in an entirely different tone of voice, demanding and tense. “Where are you bleeding?”

Certainly he could have asked Tharkay to take on his human form—or the closest he could get to a human anyway, which remained covered in silver scales and equipped with fins—for the duration of this interview. Indeed he had done so, once; Tharkay had cocked his equine head in defiance: if Ferris really wished to take notes on kelpies, he would have to work for it.

Ferris asks for Tharkay's help to write a treatise on kelpies.

    Summary

    Temeraire is dead.

Temeraire is dead, and Laurence’s reason for living along with him. He stumbles on, day by day, conscious of the concern of his friends and family, yet unable to care.

Until an unexpected letter leads Laurence to something even more unexpected still: a child.

What a Chinese orphan is doing on the streets of Edinburgh is anyone’s guess, including the orphan's. Tharkay, for his part, suspects foul play. Laurence can see all that is sensible in the man’s suspicions, yet once again he cannot bring himself to care. Not when the child reminds him so very strongly of that which he’s lost.

    Summary

Catherine said, "Jane told me that she'd mentioned it to you, though it was when you and Temeraire had first come to Loch Laggan. More than a decade ago, good heavens."

"Mentioned what to me?" Laurence asked, still vaguely concerned about the flush on Harcourt's cheeks.

"Well. About you... that is, us, to secure future companions for Lily and Temeraire..." Harcourt wouldn't meet his eyes, stammering uncharacteristically. "Not to say that it would only be an obligation, of course! You truly are a dear friend, Laurence, and I'd trust you with this more than anyone. You and Mr. Tharkay both, since I know there could never be one involved and not the other..."

Laurence felt an odd prickle upon the back of his neck, the beginnings of a suspicion-- ungentlemanly to even consider-- and found himself asking, voice gone a bit rough. "Harcourt-- Catherine. Please, I beg you speak freely, for I am always at your service. What is it you would ask of me?"

Harcourt's green eyes were wide, and Laurence had never noticed just how many flecks of gold they contained. She held his gaze and the prickling sensation, like ghostly fingertips, intensified.

"I'd ask you for a baby, Will."

    Summary

His Majesty's Aerial Corps holds many secrets, but none are more closely guarded than the Plague and the Change. A century ago, amidst the War of the Spanish Succession, disease ravaged the British Isles, bringing about the death of a majority of dragons—a tragedy of the highest order kept hidden from the public eye. Even those that survived were left unable to fight or breed new offspring. After the Plague, all that was left to carry forward to future generations were the surviving eggs yet unhatched and a single healthy formation kept away in isolation. But these were insufficient in number to make a sustainable population, and besides, there was the more urgent problem that England was still at war and still needed her dragons. The alchemist Sir Issac Newton approached the Corps, however, and proposed a solution, one that won them the war and one that is still carried forward to this day: the Change. Dragons need not be hatched, when they can be made.

Captain Will Laurence, of His Majesty's Navy, knows none of this when the hatchling Temeraire chooses him as his companion. But to Loch Laggan they have been sent, and to Loch Laggan they must go, unaware that some people go there not to train, but to become dragons.

Accepting a housemate recommendation from his friend who was almost definitely a spy wasn't the best idea John Granby ever had. In his defense, though, he had a pyromaniac eight year old to wrangle, which took up about half of his brain capacity on a good day.

"Clearly your egg will not wait for a convenient time, either; I am not much surprised. Make haste, Mr. Dorset, let us bring the egg further out on deck. And have the men halt the proceedings; we will celebrate this crossing of the Equator in a much more auspicious fashion than usual, I think."
