In a post-revolution world where androids have gained rights but are still finding their place in human society, Connor is struggling with his identity - not just as an android, but as someone discovering he's attracted to men. Feeling isolated, he anonymously joins the secure message board 'Becoming Human' designed to help androids process human emotions and relationships.
On this forum, he starts corresponding with another anonymous user, a witty and warm older man who seems to really get him. What Connor doesn’t know is that he’s been messaging Hank Anderson all along - his grizzled, compassionate former partner who is struggling with his own feelings about the android revolution… and Connor himself.

Certain that this is a test of will by Amanda, Connor tries to navigate this reality and be brought back to his own, despite these so-called "nurses" telling him it's all in his head. Connor knows Amanda, and this is something she would do... Right?
(Entirely self indulgent as there's only 5 dbh fics centred around the mental institution AU that I could find, so I'm writing one incorporating the ideas from those, in hopes some other people are looking for something similar. The main plot is heavily inspired by White Rabbit by GenericDemon. The fic seems to be abandoned, so I guess this is sort of what I invision as a continuation, but not really. Also Things We Carry by HildegardBi is VERY much worth the read.)

After the car accident that nearly killed them both and left Cole in leg braces, Hank Anderson decided life was too short to not dedicate it to his kid. He left the DPD to open his own business where he could do work he loved that didn’t risk his life while always having time for Cole. Three years later, his handroasted coffeeshop is moderately successful, and he’s looking to hire a pastry chef to add bakery goods onto his menu.
Post-revolution, RK-800 Connor is looking for reliable, simple employment that will take him away from police & investigative work and give him a chance to get his head together as a new deviant. When Captain Fowler nudges him in Hank’s direction, it seems like a logical solution.
Nothing can run smoothly, though, and while Hank manages the stress of being a single father and owning his own business, Connor is balancing his own personal existential crisis with the fact that he doesn’t fit in anywhere and isn’t sure what kind of life he’s going to lead when Hank inevitably gets sick of him and lets him go. It isn’t even close to the ‘best’ of circumstances. But Connor’s starting to think if he isn’t real in Hank’s bakery, he isn’t real at all.
