They had retreated back into the cave, deciding it was safer to wait until the sun dipped fully below the horizon.
Rumarin gave a helpless shrug. "You know how those fights go. One minute you’re swinging at something with fangs, the next you’re being clawed, stabbed, screamed at in ancient dialects, and possibly bitten. It’s all very theatrical. How was I supposed to know whether a scratch came from a sword or a pair of overzealous incisors?"
Pennelope dragged a hand down her face. "I’m going to kill you."
"You’ll have to be quick," Rumarin replied, wiggling his fingers like running legs. "I’ve heard vampires are very fast."
