That was the first and only time she cried in front of me; I hadn’t even noticed initially. She borrowed tissues, wiped her swollen eyes and red nose. She said she didn’t want to, that having these feelings exposed, her innermost words observed and spoken, felt… naked, yes. She couldn’t face it honestly, nor allow anyone to notice, so she repeatedly messed up, pushed away. Despite not wanting to, she was utterly exhausted. So she gave up, holding a kind of “damn it all” attitude, numb but occasionally erupting into extreme anger… Her words were stream-of-consciousness, vague—I can no longer fully recount, but I felt unprecedented shock. I tried to hug her, pat her shoulders, as if comforting a child, but she turned her legs away, avoiding me. In that instant, I experienced an unattainable dream—as if I became her woman, her mother, hoping yet powerless to soothe her vulnerability. At that moment, I believed her, believed her words, and even her unspoken thoughts. Though none of her words mentioned me directly, I still felt her subtle shame and sincerity—I believed it was real, delicate and true. I also believed I had touched something within her, just as she described as “naked"
