Ash could barely think straight. It all flashed through his mind. He remembered running to the library. He remembered tripping and dropping the letter Eiji gave him. He remembered that as he got back up, he felt cold metal in his abdomen, which quickly turned into excruciating pain. It wasn’t a new sensation, but this time it was different. It felt more… real.
He opened his eyes, gasping for breath, and looked down. Everything was fuzzy but he could vaguely make out something buzzing next to his ears. What was it? The blobs of color in front of him solidified into gray chairs and white walls, and he realized that the sound he heard was the consistent beeping of a heart monitor.
