Summary
The night before your wedding, Merlin came to your chambers. You stood up at his quiet entrance, loud in the stillness. His gaze fell upon you, conflict swirling in blue. You walked slowly to where you usually dressed. Both of you were silent as Merlin moved in front of you, sliding your tunic up your arms and letting it fall to the floor. Your arms dropped, and you stared at him, knowing and not knowing at once. He raised his hand, trembling, then rested it on your bare chest, right over your heart. It drummed hard, as if it wanted to leap out and fall into Merlin’s palm.
Merlin breathed shakily, and you knew.

There might have been a version of him, confronted with this sight, who would crumble and beg for forgiveness, but that Merlin seems so far away now.
At his very core, he supposes he’ll never change; he’ll be the same man who acts without thinking for his own safety, the same man who leaps into fire and lets it engulf him, lets it leave marks, and most importantly, he’ll be the same man who bleeds and bruises for Arthur.

“Because you deserve it.” Arthur answers Merlin, nothing but certainty in his voice.

"Merlin?" Arthur shakes his head, still coming to terms with it. "You're saying that Merlin truly is my soulmate?"
The eldest gives him a particular look, one that tells him she's weighing whether or not he's daft. “You do realise Emrys is the most coveted fae in the whole realm, don’t you? Many of our younglings would sacrifice much to be with him.”
Something crashes, and both of them turn to see that the source is Merlin face-first in a cart of fruit. Several people rush to help him, and Merlin comes back to his feet with his robes fully drenched in juices, laughing it off and assuring he's alright.
"That one?" Arthur turns back to the eldest, raising a sharp eyebrow.
Emrys, with wings of silver and secrets untold... shall find his fate in a mortal's grace, a human prince with a noble face. (prince arthur of camelot pisses off a fae so he gets bullied into having tact)

"Why should I listen to the words of a sorcerer and those who scheme with them?" Arthur grits his teeth.
"You can insult me all you want. Kill me for all I care, but I want you to know just how much Merlin has done for you." You grip his blade and push it away, blood seeping out of your palm. The adrenaline keeps you high. "I want you to know how much blood he got on his hands to keep your ungrateful ass safe, and I want you to thank him for it."
"Cause maybe you royals can easily wave your hand, and a man will be dead while your velvet and leather stay unstained, but he," You point at Merlin, stepping closer. "always held the grip of the knife. Every time he saved you, he had to look someone in the eyes and witness the moment life left them."
"And every. Single. Time," You jab him with a finger for every word. Blood stains Arthur's white tunic. "He went to me in tears, mumbling 'It's all for him.' All for you, Arthur."
"So I dare you to look at me in the eyes," You grin. "and tell me we're traitors to the crown."

Merlin journeys to Avalon to plead for Arthur’s return. The Sidhe agree to let them go, but there is one condition. Merlin must lead the way, and he can’t turn around to make sure Arthur is following. Not unless he wants Arthur to be sent back to Avalon forever.
Based loosely on the musical Hadestown, and the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.
