He was certain she hated him. He had blackmailed her because her father owed their company a large sum. Mr. King had claimed it was for his wife’s treatment, but Frank knew half the debt was because of his gambling addiction.

Summary
"Are you lost, sweetheart?" He was looking intently at her. Scanning her from her head to toe. It feels like he can see through her night gown and robe.
She couldn't speak, despite the cold, a heat traveled through her spine. His tone was alluring, seductive even. Her lamp flickered when the wind blows.
"Is it you?"
He didn't say anything. But a small smile formed in his lips

Summary
The next words tumble out before she can stop them: "It looks good on you." Wincing, she quickly shakes her head and grips her shoulder, arm crossed over her body. "I mean—the blue matches your eyes."
Langdon smiles, and because it's him, she knows he isn't laughing at her. "You're right," he says, holding the cuff up to his face, the sky blues matching. He looks down at the emblem on his chest. "The brown matches yours."
Mel hadn't noticed, but now she won't be able to stop.
---
Mel probably shouldn't be this close to Langdon when he's this sick, but for once, closeness comes easily to her.

Summary
Dr. Frank Langdon doesn’t get distracted—not during trauma codes, not during twelve-hour shifts, and definitely not by residents. But something about Mel King is unraveling that discipline. She’s quiet, capable, kind, sharp under pressure… and lately, impossible to ignore. He should be focused on protocol, patients, and keeping his hands to himself. But after an incident in an on call decon shower, the line he’s not supposed to cross is starting to look awfully thin.

Summary
"If we got to this point, it's because I started it." His tone carried more weight than he meant it to, a tired blend of confession and blame that hung in the air between them.
"What point are we at?" asked Mel, her voice level and expectant.
"I don't know. Wherever you want to be."
There weren't any conditions, and he wasn't demanding any second chances, but he was offering the plain truth of what he had to give, which was his presence in any shape or form she wanted. He would give himself, fully, if she would have him.
Mel shrugged slightly, inhaling deeply through her nose and letting it go even slower, as if deflating. "Just... with you. Anywhere, anyway."
