She was sort of a little bit thrilled by it, thrilled by his choosing her, thrilled by the STEMI timing, thrilled by the way the department worked so smoothly sometimes she felt like a cog in a machine.
And she liked to think she was a cog in a machine because it meant she was useful and purposeful and something needed or even wanted her there. She thought of Eleanor in The Haunting of Hill House, who said, placidly, she remembered because the word was so pleasing and so sad, “I’ve never been wanted anywhere.” She felt very much like Eleanor, haunted by ghosts, reaching out her hand in the darkness and waking up alone. And her intense wanting was a wound she was sure people could see, bleeding down her forehead, a primal warning sign to back away slowly so no one else would get hurt. What about me, she wanted to beg, what about my wound, but she knew that, too, was a childish fantasy. That it would be more work than anyone was willing to put in to get past the walls she put up in the form of busyness and delight and surface-level vulnerability so they couldn’t see the depth of her hurt and grief lurking inside.

Poor kid, he had time to think before his eyes traveled from the body covered by the heating blanket to the young man's face.
His heart dropped in his chest and his whole body turned cold with fear.
“Oh god…Whitaker?” he said as his eyes landed on the very familiar face.
The young man was deathly pale, skin waxy and lips blue, but there was no doubt in his mind that this was their former med student that he hadn't seen in months lying lifeless on the gurney, body covered in blankets, c-collar around his neck and breathing tube in his mouth and secured to his face.

Dennis doesn't get matched with PTMC or the emergency department. Almost a year later he is brought into the ER in critical condition. By then no one has heard from him in months.

A medical student graduating and becoming an intern is typically not something Robby celebrates. His gaggle of baby doctors, this particular, tight-knit group, who all miraculously didn’t quit after the hell that was the Pittfest shift, their first ever shift at PTMC, seems monumental, however.
Robby also may have a very Jack-shaped weakness, one that has gotten even worse after the aforementioned MCI shift.

He tries to work through things in therapy but the forced proximity to Jack only fuels the spiral in his mind about what they are (and what they aren't.)
