Izzy joined the howl, screaming like a coyote in the night as he gunned his engine and drove straight into the inferno.
The feeling was alleviating, invigorating. Euphoric. It felt as if all of his mortal worries and fears were being burned away by the solar fire, leaving behind only the rush of reckless adrenaline.
Maybe they were old, and broken. Maybe. But he felt more alive in this moment than he ever had in his life. His heart beat faster as the heat grew, raging inside of him as it melted away his insides. He was nearing sixty years of age and going close to eighty miles down an abandoned scenic route, legs rumbling with the hot engine of his motorcycle, body thrumming with the hot presence of Duff behind him.
Sweat dripped into his eyes. He could keep driving like this forever. Leave it all behind. Duff’s impending divorce, his impending insanity, the need for food, shelter, sleep, gasoline. They were beyond the point. Izzy was going to drive and drive and drive, straight into the sunset with Duff holding his body tight, burning until oblivion.
Maybe their hearts were old, but they beat strong, and they beat together.
