“This has to be some kind of conflict of interest,” Regulus says, his lip curling at James.
James shrugs, the idiot, “I don’t know.” His voice is weary, tired. He even looks tired, even though he’s been sleeping all day. In fact, he looks more than just a bit tired. There are deep, dark circles under his eyes, his hair is sticking up– and not in the endearing way it usually is– but simply out of control.
He’s thinner than he used to be, and his brown skin is sallow. Regulus’ eyes catch on the two massive bandages wrapping around his arms.
Jesus fuck.
Regulus had no idea James was… no. He couldn’t do this right now. He was here (and had been for some time now) to figure his own shit out. Not to worry about James’ suicidal ideations. Not to mention, he hated James. So this whole thing? It wasn’t going to work.

If he had stayed, still been the Black heir, with his unruly hair and a feral edge to his eyes, would the Dark Lord’s obsession have turned upon him instead. The idea makes Regulus shudder. He can’t imagine his stubborn wild brother brought to heel by this monster, but there would have been no other option, not even death was a suitable escape. From the moment Lord Voldemort had laid eyes upon a stiff backed and scared Regulus, he had been doomed.

Summary
Regulus accepted his lot in life a long time ago. Long before his father got sick. Long before his brother left. Long before his mother got sick of his father’s sickness.
It might have been as early as before he could walk, or even talk. Maybe, even in the fleshy shelter of his mother’s womb, he knew he was fated to a life lived for other people. A life without sunshine and holidays, without jazz music, rock music, dessert, pets, romance.
It’s not as if he didn’t want those things. Of course he did. He wanted those things like any other boy growing up in England in the 1960s and 70s. Sex and drugs and cigarettes; he wanted them. He just wasn’t allowed those things. Even when his mother couldn’t stop him because he was old enough to go out and take them, he wasn’t allowed those things.
That was before Remus, and everything that came after.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
