“That’s not pathetic,” Mike reassured. “I’m sure tons of people our age haven’t had their first kiss.”
“Sure,” Will snorted. “Doesn’t make me feel any better about it. I just wish I got to know, like, what it feels like." He blushed. "I mean- god, that sounded so stupid-”
“It’s really not all that, Will. You’re not missing out on much.” Mike looked a little awkward with all this kissing talk.
“Really? Cause Lucas talks about it like Max is some goddess, like, blessing him.”
Mike stuck his tongue out. “Ew. Well he’s playing it up. El seemed to like it and all, but sometimes it seemed like we were just making out to, well, make out. Not ‘cause it actually felt good.”
Will pulled a face. “I really don’t want to hear about you making out with my sister.” He really did not.
“Look,” Mike blurted out. “Why don’t I just kiss you? Then you could, you know, know how it feels and die happy.”

this moment reminds el of when they were younger, the first week of her life, when she met mike and lucas and dustin. when she was hiding in mike's basement like a stray dog he was feeding. when she was so, so scared but her friends made it better, even when they didn't like her. when mike taught her what the word friend meant.
their roles were reversed, back then. mike spent a lot of his time comforting her. he'd sit next to her, talking away, and suddenly she wouldn't feel so alone. she wouldn't feel like a monster, or a weapon, or a freak. she'd just be a kid.
el doesn't think she'll ever be able to fully repay mike for everything he did for her. she used to try, thinks that's why she stayed with him for so long even when it was getting really bad. but she's realized that love isn't a transaction. she doesn't owe anyone anything.
but she wants to give this to him. she wants to help. because she loves him, and that's a choice she's making.
(or: gender crises are best served rare, but we also serve well-done.)

There are some great quick-and-dirty guides to HTML on A03. This is not one of them - it is a comprehensive guide
It's now 2025, a decade later. A03 supports some new HTML and and we're all walking around reading fic on supercomputers that fit in a jean pocket. It was time update this and take a crack at finishing it. (Links and Images are in, the new Audio and Video tags are not.)
The previous three chapters have been divided into smaller concepts. Each tag continues to have - at a minimum - a link to the w3schools page about it (so you can learn more), a code example, and the result of the code example. Most tags have their attributes, things like [src] or [title], listed and examples of how using the attributes modify the tags.
There's a chapter on Bad Ideas, including how some of the archive's default CSS is available to you to format your work (users can't turn that off by hiding a workskin!)
Oh. And I added a bunny army. You could learn how to add one too.
