Summary
He ascends as quickly as his meager athleticism will allow and when he reaches the second floor landing his ears immediately twitch, catching the sound of soft music.
It’s… lovely. And Essek finds himself caught, like a fish on a lure, and drawn in towards the source.
He finds it a couple of yards down from the staircase, tucked away in a lamplit alcove; an upright piano, the top of it crowded with books, and a certain red-headed wizard at the bench, his freckled fingers dancing across the keys.
The wizards—and Beau—watch a meteor shower whilst Ruidus is at its zenith in the hills outside Zadash. Some surprises are had and wishes are made.

Summary
“You haven’t heard a single word I’ve said, have you, my love?” he asks, voice full of affection and mirth.
Caleb chuckles. “Ah, you’ve caught me,” he says, tracing his free hand down Essek’s freckled cheek. “Nein, I have been admiring you, Schatz.”
Essek hums, leaning into his touch. “I suppose I can forgive you, then. But just this once,” he reaches up and playfully flicks Caleb’s nose. “And you have to listen about this next one.”
The wizards go on a stargazing date and Essek shares a Kryn folktale.

Summary
They’re not quite a week into it now and Essek has seldom felt so at ease in his life. The weather is hot, but the humidity is mild, and there’s no shortage of good books to read, beautiful flora to examine, and tasty food to eat.
Caleb too has shed the weight of the last few months, an easy smile adorning his freckled face most times Essek has caught his eye. It’s warmed his heart immeasurably, seeing his partner finding peace again.
Caleb and Essek slip away to have an evening to themselves whilst on vacation with friends from the Arcana Pansophical. Shenanigans and feelings ensue.

Summary
Essek enters his field of view from the left side of the garden, his sun hat askew and his caddy of gardening tools loosely held in a shaking, dirt-stained hand.
“It’s the peonies,” Essek says and Caleb’s heart immediately sinks because he sounds desperately upset. “I don’t… they were fine yesterday—”
“Let me see,” Caleb offers before Essek can work himself up anymore, crossing the remaining distance to his partner.
In the heat of early summer, a blow is struck to Essek's garden.

Essek looked online, and after deeming most of the ads absurd, caught one that seemed good.

Summary
“This is not a negotiation.” Deirta Thelyss’s voice cracked the air like a thunderclap, sharp enough that even her ever-bustling flock of attendants twitched. “You will agree to this marriage, or I will have you cast from Den Thelyss for dereliction of duty. Is that clear?”
Essek held himself stiffly, his shoulders rising in affront. A dangerous lapse of control, considering the woman standing before him, and one he would berate himself for later in the privacy of his tower, but he couldn’t help it. To be bartered off as—as a diplomatic representative of all things. It was absurd, insulting. Was the prestige his accomplishments brought to the den not enough? The Bright Queen herself had awarded him the title of Shadowhand for the advancements he’d made to the field of dunamancy, advancements that had secured countless victories in the war. Why should he have to upend his entire life to accommodate some human he’d never even met?

Summary
Caleb and Essek settling down in Nicodranas and building happiness together, making the most of the time they've been given.
This will be a mid-length multi-chap of a year in the life of wizards in love. I'll promise right now that we're not getting angsty in this. L*fespans will be mentioned, it's inevitable, but it's not going to be featured, because they are trying to live in the here and now, dammit. Nobody breaks up, nobody dies. I am simply not strong enough for that. Only good soft happy fluffy things.
(E rating for Chapters 2, 4, 6, 8, if that's what you're here for. 90% of these tags are for Chapter 4.)

Summary
The ringing note of a concert A is played by the oboe, echoing on its own in the space. It’s picked up by the wind section, followed rapidly by the brass, and the familiar feeling of an orchestra calibrating takes over Caleb. The tonal adjustments as each person brings their instrument into alignment sinks into him and something inside Caleb shifts in recognition as Essek leads the strings into their own tuning.
It’s like something is waking up, like something unfurling and firing across long-unused paths of memory. His hands shake slightly, as he raises his bow and joins them, fingers fumbling against the pegs and fine tuners that give him control over his instrument.
----
Essek Thelyss is a leading violinist, his spot as Shadowhand of the Rosohna Philharmonic Orchestra has been uncontested for over a decade. Caleb Widogast is a recent arrival to the city, convinced by his friends to audition for one of the vacant violinist positions.
After starting off on the wrong foot, Caleb and Essek get to slowly know each other, discover what brings them joy, create while defying expectations, and find out that what they can produce together may just be better than anything they can do separately.
