Summary
Buck’s breath caught in his throat.
He tugged at the rope around his wrists, twisting and contorting himself in an attempt to wrench himself out of the restraints. The rope burned against his skin. Buck wasn’t sure if it was sweat or water running down his face, but he didn’t care. He needed to get out of the rope.
The more he struggled, the more the rope cut into his skin until the burning sensation on his wrists rivaled that of the throbbing in his head.
“That’s not going to work,” a soft, familiar voice said behind him.
Buck’s blood ran cold. “Chase?”
“Nice to see you, Buckley.” Footsteps echoed around him until Chase Mackey’s smug face appeared before him. “I have to say, you’ve looked better.”
“What’s going on?” Buck tugged against the restraints. “Where am I?”
“We’re going to play a game.” Mackey reached into the front pocket of his suit — did he only own suits? — and pulled something out.
Buck’s phone.

Summary
That's what his mother's grief has done to him.
It's forced him to obey any order given to him, no matter the order, with the only restriction being that he's forbidden from knowingly hurting another person. Mentally, physically, emotionally; he's not allowed to injure another person, even under the orders of another person.
That's his saving grace when Chase Mackey discovers his secret. When Mackey orders him to file the lawsuit, he never says Buck can't drop it immediately after.
Which he does.
But it's too late.
The damage is done.

Summary
Bobby makes a small noise in the back of his throat, bordering on agitated, the kind he always makes when he’s trying to keep himself from raising his voice. “I’m not a role model, Buck,” he says, and okay, whatever, he’s wrong, but that’s—
“And I’m not your father, either.”
The breath punches out of Buck’s lungs. For a violent, confused second, he thinks Bobby’s actually hit him.
