Count Olaf found her in one of the houses' he burned down, intrigued by her reckless and violent nature, he rips her away from the ashes of what used to be her home. Though Julia was only 4, Olaf saw her as a weapon waiting to be honed.

After 8 years of training, Olaf introduces a new goal: the Baudelaire's fortune. After burning down the Baudelaire estate - with help from Julia - Olaf pulls off a scheme for the Baudelaire children to fall into his grubby hands.

    Summary

Life was relatively normal for you, as normal as it can be for any normal teenage girl that was orphaned under mysterious circumstances at a young age and sent to the austere academy that was Prufrock Preparatory School. Or at least, it was normal until the Baudelaire orphans came along and brought count Olaf with them, the guy who made his way into your life worse than the Spanish conquistadors.

Where will your unsavory encounter lead to? Will it be more misery, or maybe redemption? And if so, for who?

‘“Oh Klaus,” Olaf sighs loftily, moving to your side and resting his elbow on your shoulder. You shiver as his hand crawls down your chest, coming to rest perilously close to your bosom and Olaf finishes, “I’ll touch whatever I want.”

    And he would.’

After the awful events at Lucky Smells Lumbermill, Mr. Poe, an extremely unhelpful banker, takes the Baudelaire siblings to Prufrock Preparatory School, thinking putting them in an educational environment will solve their problems, also known as Count Olaf. There, they meet the Quagmire siblings, three quadruplets with a backstory suspiciously similar to their own. Together, they begin looking into the mystery that has plagued both sets of siblings since the deaths of their parents.

But of course, nothing stays safe in the Baudelaires’ world for long, and Count Olaf, also known as their problems, isn’t far behind. Halfway between the bleak beginning to their story and the enigmatic end, Count Olaf and his troupe chase the Baudelaires to four more locations, each more far-flung than the last. But the mystery was never solved at Prufrock Prep, and it continues to chase the Baudelaires as they try to put a stop to Count Olaf’s new schemes — that are somehow even more despicable than before.

    Summary

Mercurial (adjective): (of a person) subject to sudden or unpredictable changes of mood or mind.

Mercy (noun): compassion shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm.

“Well, well, well,” a voice coos from somewhere above you; smooth as a rich dark chocolate. And even more bitter. Two calloused fingertips tip your chin roughly upward and your eyes fly open, terror gripping you as you come face to face with none other than your captor, Count Olaf. A victorious smirk tugs one side of his lips up, revealing broken, crooked teeth. He purrs in a low tone, “Look who’s finally awake.”

    Summary

Sartre once said, “Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does.”

The air is still, suspended in that rare moment of perfect tension, where everything becomes weightless, yet carries the weight of everything. I have always understood that there is more to this moment than what is seen, to each breath, each thought, each action.

This is what Sartre meant, I think - freedom is not just the absence of restraint, but the acknowledgment that each choice, no matter how seemingly small, is a declaration. The weight of the world, of this moment, is on my shoulders alone. I am condemned to this freedom. I could hold the arrow here, forever, and the world would continue in its unfathomable dance, circling around the singularity of this moment, but I cannot.

The shot must be made. The tension between the past and the future collapses into the present. The arrow hits its mark - dead center.

As I scan the cheering crowd, there’s a gnawing absence where there should be something solid, something I’ve always relied on. My parents aren't here. Not even the device that so often rests in my mother’s hands, glinting with strange symbols as she watches me.

    Summary

Mildred Clementine Mortimer was not a Baudelaire in name or blood, but she was in the ways that actually mattered. She had been raised alongside the children since she was a baby due to their families being close. Her parents had left her in the Baudelaire's custody when she merely was 9 months old and they promptly disappeared and were presumed dead. When the Baudelaire's died she was to be moved with their children as their sister in all legal circumstances, after all she WAS their daughter. This left her in several unfortunate circumstances, but the Baudelaires were her family and she wasn't about to leave them.
