Kai rolls his eyes, but he gets ready to listen regardless. Nya doesn't even look up from her phone, her brain easily passing over Zane’s conversation filler. Jay furrows his eyebrows, confused, because he knows Zane doesn’t have a mom—they all know Zane doesn’t have a mom. Lloyd just sort of frowns, waiting.
“Oh, man, what'd she say this time?” Cole asks, sounding genuinely concerned as he puts his drink back on the table. Well, someone doesn’t know Zane doesn’t have a mom.>

Cole was so caught up in his rebellion against his father that their friendship became collateral damage. People grow and they grow apart but that wasn't supposed to apply to them too. They were the for-lifers, the beyond-the-gravers. It was them against the world until it wasn't.And now all Kai had left were memories and a whirlwind of emotions and feelings. He should've known high school was going to be a mess even for somebody like himself.

Lilly was soon bedridden, and usually when Cole got home from school, she would be asleep. Cole didn’t mind though. It gave him a chance to get started on the housework that now fell of his shoulders. He usually went straight to the grocery store after school to get food for dinner but today he felt like he was coming down with a fever. Walking the 1.2 km’s in the cold wind probably wouldn’t help, but Cole didn’t have bus money, and it wasn’t like he could ask Lou for a lift.
Sometimes Cole wished he had a different life, one where he wasn’t stealing money from his father to buy a new school uniform, or where he didn’t have to come home to a mother lying in bed, dying. Every time he thought that he immediately felt guilty, he loved his parents, but he just wished things were different. -
