He really didn’t need the protection, but his stupid overly protective husband just refused to see reason. Though maybe all the trouble Merlin got into every time he left the castle wasn’t helping his argument.
Or the 5 times Arthur adds a new guard to Merlin’s protection detail and the 1 time Merlin does something about it!

Prince Arthur did not intend to bring Merlin on patrol, he didn’t even know his manservant could ride a horse. But he can’t say no to that grin, not when Merlin has gone and packed and saddled up a horse for himself without asking. It’s a dull, routine patrol along the border, almost a formality at this point. Even if magic is legal in Escetir, they’ve held a shaky peace treaty with Camelot for over a decade; it’s unlikely they’ll see any danger.
But what Arthur does not know is that the recent spike in deaths of magical creatures in Camelot has not gone unnoticed. There are whispers that King Uther is a liar and a hypocrite, now secretly rebuilding his magical defence. And to bring sorcery to the border - well now, that would be an act of aggression tantamount to declaring war.

"Eternal one"? That's a new one for the resume, courtesy of a rather ominous prophecy unearthed with a suspiciously well-preserved tomb. For Merlin, reincarnation usually meant a quiet life (as quiet as it gets when you're surrounded by the oblivious reincarnations of the Round Table). But a near-drowning in a magically messed-up Lake Avalon and this sudden archaeological drama have rather spoiled the peace. Now, with Arthur's past-life déjà vu kicking in and- HER shadow lengthening across modern-day Wales, Merlin's starting to think fifteen centuries wasn't nearly long enough for a decent holiday. The lake tried to warn him. Probably. He just hopes they all don't end up drowning in the ensuing chaos. Again.

Even so, you could only show so much ability before people got suspicious.
So in Ealdor, it had always been playing down his abilities. He never imagined he was going to be hiding them completely. Merlin lived by Gaius’ rules, most of the time. Half the time. Whenever they didn’t get in his way, if he was being honest.
However, recently, his magic had been itchy, for lack of better words. He felt it under his skin, in his veins, his hair. Heard it in every breath he breathed, every word that came from his mouth. -

It’s dark outside. Grey and cloudy. Among the mess the sound of thunder is prominent. Merlin wonders if lightning could kill him in the way it did Nimueh. The way he used lightning, taking advantage of nature, to kill Nimueh.
His eyes linger downwards. If he fell, would his skull splatter on the concrete below, just for his brains to be swept up and blood washed away the next morning? His hand tightens over the glass, it would leave fingerprints - marking such an expensive item.
Would anyone care? Would the Knights care? Would Gaius or his mother care? Would Arthur care? He felt his throat restrict air from escaping his trembling lips. Would he be just alone as he was today in the forest? Would the world allow him to die that time?
