She scoots closer, “Mike, really, you’re Mike and Will! I’m sure there’s nothing you could do that would make him hate you. You can fix whatever’s going on between you two if you just talk things out.”
Mike pushes her hand off his shoulder.
Maybe I should let Nancy hate me too. If she found out it might hurt her less.

Mike has an argument with Will which ends with him feeling like he's made everything worse.

“You’re back,” Mike states as his wide eyes catch Will’s.
Will just tilts his head at him as he takes his seat. “Yeah, I said I would be.”
“Right, obviously,” Mike mutters before stabbing his chicken sandwich with his toothpick.
“What?” Will asks despite every inkling in his body telling him to drop this conversation and just pick up his burger. “Did you think I was just going to leave?”
“No, I-”
“Because I wouldn’t just…” Will cuts himself off before he can finish and looks down at his plate instead, the unsaid words resting bitter on his tongue. I wouldn’t just leave with no explanation. Not like you did.
----------After everything they've been through, it is Mike who rips off the final band-aid of their friendship. Years pass of Will pretending like he never thinks about Mike at all. Years pass of him forging his own life and finally letting go.
But when a young boy shows up at Will's apartment, it becomes clear that he'll never fully be done with Mike Wheeler.

Mike knew why he wanted to watch the movie so much after that. The fights were cool and the story was awesome and Luke was pretty, but for some reason he felt like he wasn’t supposed to mention that last reason. When he thought about it, Nancy’s giggle would ring in his ears, telling him it was ridiculous for him to watch it for Luke. Some part of his chest knew if he had said he liked looking at Leia, Nancy’s giggle would’ve been teasing instead of mocking, but he wouldn’t let that ruin his favorite movie, so he just started keeping track of his eyes a little more. Counting the moments he looked at Luke. Ten seconds at a time, that was the rule he made. If he only looked for ten seconds, then let his eyes wander the scene for another ten before he could look again. The rule only counted if he was around other people, alone he still stared at the pretty boy on the tv screen for every second he graced it.

"W-what?" Will blurts out once he's regained his composure, his eyes blown wide and his hand shaking. Mike won't even look him in the eye but he contemplates running the boy to the bathroom because he's positively green.
Hopper groans softly, quiet enough not to startle them, and presses a hand to his face in stress. "Kid, I- I know. About you two."
This time Mike speaks, letting out a soft, "Oh." His eyes are burning holes in the sheets while he looks like he's about to cry and Hopper wants to run screaming because he hates emotions.

Strangely enough, Mike found that he would rather be held hostage right now if that meant being held hostage with Will, as that was better than being without him.
He pushed the button down. "He's..he's gone. Will's gone."
"Gone?" Dustin repeated, sounding as stressed as Mike was right now. "What do you mean, gone?"
Mike stared at the tree, at the spot where the gate had been..
..."The Upside Down..it took him."
Losing Will was nothing new to Mike, happening more times than he'd be willing to admit, because really you shouldn't be losing a whole human being as often as Mike Wheeler lost Will Byers. Despite losing him once again and everything that came with it, Mike would rather die than leave him in the Upside Down. So what does Mike do? The most logical thing, of course.
He follows Will right into the hell that took him because he would follow Will anywhere.

Summary
Mike Wheeler feels utterly alone. The unbreakable bond of the Party somehow fractured. Lucas has abandoned them for the jocks, Max has withdrawn after Billy's departure, and even Dustin is distracted by new friendships. El's letters seem to bring her joy, yet for Mike, he can’t seem to be anything but disappointed, as he secretly wishes they were from someone else entirely.
He misses Will terribly, calling daily despite the busy landline. He hoards unsent letters in his closet, ashamed of the vulnerability within them. He eventually gives up, convinced Will has abandoned him after last year's mistreatment.
Mike also faces a brutal life at home. Ted left, and Karen took in an abusive alcoholic. He endures constant physical abuse and the responsibility to protect Holly, especially now that Nancy is at college.
When the Byers family returns to Hawkins for Spring Break, Mike’s internal struggle only intensifies. He dismisses frequent headaches and nosebleeds as weather changes, and his recurring nightmares as a normal reaction to past trauma. But when a creepy voice invades his thoughts and hallucinations warp his reality, Mike can no longer ignore the truth: something is deeply wrong.

“Will!” Mike couldn’t see anything. He was panicking. Five seconds ago he’d been leaning against the couch with Will’s head in his lap. Now he wasn’t. Mike’s basement began to fade back into view. But... it wasn't right. His grandma’s old quilt, the one that had been on its last legs and had finally fallen apart over a year ago, was laid against the couch. The walls of the basement were covered in Will’s old art, just the old stuff, not the new stuff.
“Mike.” A voice cut through the hollow silence.
Mike pales. A boy of around fourteen stands in front of him now, in a sweater and jeans. His freckled skin is flushed with red and his almost black hair is out of order. He looks scared. It's HIM. It's Micheal Wheeler. Or was, anyway.

In the winter of 1988, Mike meets his younger self in a vision of sorts, and helps him sort through his shit.

Mike wasn’t coming after him this time. This whole thing was Mike’s fault in the first place, and Will didn’t want to see him, he made that clear. He did want Mike to notice, though. He wanted Mike to be standing inside the arcade, staring at the front door, itching to come outside and talk to him. He wanted Mike to get a shit score at Dig Dug because he was distracted wondering where Will had gone.
It was kind of like the View-Master feeling, being stuck between resenting Mike so much and wanting him back so desperately. Sometimes, there would be a glitch, and the facade he carefully constructed would disappear, revealing the cold, harsh truth. I still love him.
