He looked up to see the demon reaching for him, an inhuman grin on its face. He tried to think of something to defend himself, but just when the demon was about to grab his collar, it tensed, then its body jerked backwards, then to the side. He finally registered that someone was speaking, and he looked behind himself, to where Lucia had gotten out from her spot, and was holding her hand out and speaking in an unfamiliar language. The demon jerked once, twice more, than black smoke poured from its mouth, bursting into flame, and presumably being sent to Hell.

The GIW caused the apocalypse, so John Constantine needs to make a deal with the god of Time in the Infinite Realms to undo the damage as well as find out what the fuck happened. The god for some reason wants him to nurture (incubate? carry?) not one, but two injured, unstable ghost cores and raise them until they become independent on their own.
Why doesn't their doctor or parent(s?) take care of them instead? Good question, he doesn't know either. Apparently he was the most suitable and available besides the parent themself, who is wounded severely. Joy.
He's too desperate to refuse right now, so he'll accept it either way. At least the deal seems to be in his favor.

Who apparently could smell the insane amount of magic wafting off her. He decides to take her in and train her in hopes that she will be able to use the magic that is now fused to her soul.
