    The dragon screamed, patches of her scales flaking away at the rush of white light spreading from the injury. Somewhere nearby, Sausage screamed, triumphant and hysterical, but Pixl heard it for no more than moments before a heavy feeling of terror rose, slamming the breath from his lungs and making him waver where he stood.

    Something was about to happen. He’d felt this before, in the brief shocked moments before incomprehensible tragedy, like stepping onto sand and finding it falling from beneath you.

    They had made a mistake.

     

    Or: Pixl, prophet of the desert, utterly fails to see the future. Overcome with guilt, he flees, intent on vanishing into the unexplored sands.

    It was a quiet night. Scott was thankful for it. He enjoyed his job, sure, but it was stressful. Even with his powers, Scott often found himself overwhelmed by run-of-the-mill criminals. Supervillains were a whole different story.

    Scott’s thoughts paused when he heard a small scuffle from behind. He took a deep breath, steadying himself, then whirled around, Rune Blade outstretched.

    “Come out.” He ordered. “I know you’re there.”

    Slowly, a human came out from behind a bush. He was wearing an obnoxiously green and, frankly, shoddily made supersuit. In lieu of a mask, the human had a large, brown fish head on his head.

    “Who are you?” Scott demanded.

    Pixl got out of bed near-silently and grabbed the trident and shield he always kept nearby, creeping to the door. Pixandria was quiet, mostly sleeping, with only a few still awake. There were some guards out, of course, but none of them would have been so loud.

    Pixl knew his city, and he knew the difference between how it sounded when all was well and when there was an intruder.

     

    Or: Sausage didn't come back to life the same, and Pixl is the only one who can understand. That doesn't make them friends.

    One church believes the world will end with an eternal winter, one that will simply begin but never end. The harbinger of the end will come on frozen wings with the ancestral song of ice in their mind.

    Scott has had a rough couple of months. A bit of a rough life, too. Despite all that, he still didn't think he would be the cause of the apocalypse.
