Summary
Between slipping grades and an explosive break-up, Quentin's first year at Brakebills was coming to a miserable close—and that was before the Beast attacked. Now everyone's cancelling their summer plans to join in the fight against an existential threat, Fillory is both real and much deadlier than in the books, and it turns out Quentin sucks as much at battle magic as he does at everything else. As the war drags on, dying in battle starts to seem like the best possible outcome, the answer to all his problems: one shining moment of glory, and then he's finally free. It's a foolproof plan—until he wakes up and has to do it all over again.

Summary
Eliot Waugh is the Prince of Brakebills University, living without a care in the world. That is, until his platonic soulmate finds love, thanks to his definitely-not-unintentional matchmaking. It was a big change, but all’s well that ends well and he’s happy for Margo and Julia. You know. Mostly.
But no one likes a renowned hedonist who focuses on his inner maudlin blah. So instead, Eliot opts to invest his energy into taking a new girl under his wing. She's dorky, intense, fresh off a year-long sojourn at Brakebills South... and in desperate need of fun.
What a lucky young lady that Alice Quinn is.
(Or: Unabashedly Queer “Emma,” at Brakebills.)

Summary
"Abandoned by life, by everything he knew, by the objects that had once held beauty and power and significance, now nothing but broken ceramic, melting leather, scrambled eggs, scalding metal, burning paper, and inedible fruit, by any faith he once held in the magic of these things, he had nothing left to give. He looked at Penny, and he couldn't move, couldn't argue, couldn't see. All he could do was open his mouth, smile faintly, and ask, just above a whisper, "Please?"
All Penny could do was look back at him, sigh, and snap his fingers, and then he was alone. Suddenly he was back, looking far more tired than when he left. He laughed and smiled, the warmest look Quentin had ever seen on the man's face. He said, 'You're a fool Coldwater. And a persuasive one at that." Then another snap, a flash of bright light, and he was gone, and Quentin was sitting on a stump, and the fire was burning hot."
Or
Quentin shows up late to his own funeral, and Eliot gets to be brave.

“You still want to climb out of here?”
“Yes,” Quentin says immediately.
“It’s going to be hard,” Penny warns, his gaze weirdly intense and serious.
“God, yeah, I figured it would be,” Quentin mutters, squirming out of Penny’s personal space. “Everything from pretty much every mythology ever says it’s a pain in the ass.”

Summary
“Do you really want to put yourself through hell, just on the off-chance your friend makes the choice to follow you back?”
And the thing is, Eliot's pulled back so many times. Back from the opportunity, the chance at something more, something bigger, something good. Pulled back so many times because he’d been so afraid. But he’s been living in a world without Quentin for five days. Five days, which is ten, a hundred times more time than he needed to figure out that all the fear he’d felt his entire life was nothing compared to this. He would walk through hell and back on a thousand to one odds, a million to one, if it meant there was the faintest, vaguest, slightest sliver of a chance that Q would be waiting for him at the other end.
“Yes,” he says.
Or: Quentin Coldwater is dead. And Eliot Waugh isn't having it. Enter The Dante Clause.

“I don’t think either of us is exactly married to anyone, anymore,” Eliot hedges, giving Q a sheepish look.
“The circumstances aren’t really clear,” Quentin says, picking up the paper to squint at it again. “I think we could fake it.”
“You can’t fake a marriage for magic, Quentin.”

Summary

He doesn’t watch all of the people he loves mourn him and think my life is done. He doesn’t give up, or give in, or waste away.
But he dreams he does.

Summary
Are they forever going to be crashing through each other’s lives like this? They can’t quite seem to converge without a stomach-swerving sort of chaos—not in this world, in this timeline. Certainly not intentionally and mutually, or without shame, regret and shouldn’t haves. So many mistakes that surely didn’t add up to anything worth learning from. Because of course he shouldn’t have slept with Eliot and he shouldn’t look at him either. Not the way he wants to. The way he knows he always has, even when Alice was right there, sharp-eyed and silent, watching Quentin want things he couldn’t have.
Quentin never has been very good at stopping himself from wanting.
Or: Quentin and Eliot have a lot to work out before they can find their way back to one another. And then a whole lot more after that.
