Cross’s universe is gone, completely erased. He’s left by himself, (or what he wishes was by himself) with the guilt of his actions.
That is until another figure comes along. Someone who would save him, help him. But how is Cross supposed to believe this? How is he supposed to believe it after what happened with the Protector?
aka. Cross trying to adjust to living with the Bad Sanses after being alone (with XChara, but he doesn’t have a good relationship with him) in the remnants (at least, he wishes there were remnants) of his universe.

Hanahaki Disease: a fictional disease in which the victim coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. It ends when the beloved returns their feelings or when the victim dies.
Dream had read about this concept before in books that his brother had shown him, but it was always just a fictional trope to him.
The only one sided love he had ever experienced was with his other half; His brother. But that would be ridiculous, right? It wasn’t romantic love like the book had described.

What if Nightmare left before he was ever pushed into biting the black apple? Instead he set off from the world of Dreamtale leaving his twin all alone. The grief and turmoil consumed the guardian. Instead of externally creating a twisted version internally it sprouted an even deeper rooted evil, in the once positive twin. Dream is left to handle Dreamtale and idle with immorality all alone. The thing is isolation and grief are maddening. That madness and corruption cause Dream to become desperate, and in that desperation he consumes all life in his path.
