Summary
Light has been under suspicion for a crime he cannot remember - a crime he could never commit. But when evidence is found against his girlfriend, Light has no choice but to prove his innocence beyond a shadow of a doubt. He agrees to lock himself into a cage. But fifty days pass, and the shadows surrounding them grow and darken, hiding the most terrible demons. Despite Light's willing surrender, the detective L's keen eyes still cannot pick out the truth from the lies. What he knows is this: Yagami Light must be Kira, and no matter what it takes, no matter the time he must wait to attain his coveted confession or the lengths he must go to, L will find the truth. And Light will do anything to preserve his own life, to convince L that he isn't Kira, even at the cost of his own sanity. What L and Light fail to consider is that they aren’t fighting the real enemy. They fail to understand that some questions will ruin you; this is a lesson some learn only after they are ruined.

Light has hanahaki disease. Light is going to die. Light is going to die because he... well.
(Had he wanted? The way his fingers itched, his skin crawled every night of their cohabitation from the impulse to both get closer and run far, far away? Was it desire from that very first night, when he’d doubled over and slammed his fists into his desk, cheeks stained red with fury, and heat roiling in his gut? And L had looked back with his hungry, twin black hole eyes, and had tried to devour him first.)
Light wasn’t sorry for killing him.
It wasn’t so much desire as it was wanting to dominate, and to tear him down, tear him apart and eat him. Obliterate his body into a billion subatomic particles and enmesh them in his own, embed them between every one of his own cells and become one.
He supposed he had succeeded, in a half way. Light was L. They were one. But it was empty, and victoryless.

Summary
A small yet crucial action must have been taken to keep the Death Note in the rightful hands. Murder it's old god, pass it to the new god. It was simple, just quickly write down the current holder while holding the Death Note, nothing was supposed to go wrong. Yet, in the heat of the moment, he didn't notice that the man, the same one he'd been mentally battling for what felt like years. The same man he wanted nothing more than to choke out with his bare, bloody hands. The same man he yet saw every single day with his eyes of rage and disgust, bottled all up into his pupils. The same man leaned over and watched as he did this heinous act of open-air murder.
The plan was supposed to work, but it didn't. And that small action changed the course of their lives --and the people around them-- forever.

"I thought about doing this for months, Ryuuzaki. Did you know that?" Light muses, eyes contentedly watching his own hands as they work, lazily tracing the tip of the knife down the ridges of L's chest. Smug bastard, of course L knows. They both knew, it was the unacknowledged (now tangible) threat hanging over them for months. It didn't need to be said.
Light continues on, seemingly disinterested, but it's a facade. The blade pauses in his hand, resting along the tender underside of L's rib cage. "Even when I had no memory of being Kira, I dreamed of this, of avenging myself for the suffering you've caused me and my family." Light allows some of his hatred through now, and L watches as he puts pressure on the blade, creating a small indentation in his skin. But he goes no further. It's as if he's pausing in thought, reconsidering. Another lie.
"I wanted you at the mercy of my own two hands."
