"Well, as I'm sure you know, you're very bright," started Master Ikithon, almost conspiratorially, his eyes twinkling. Bren ducked his head, embarrassingly pleased by the compliment. "Top of your class, you'll be a credit to our great empire one day."
A credit to the Empire. The words rang through his ears. It was all he had ever wanted, to help people and protect them. That dream seemed so close he could almost taste it, sending shivers of excitement down his back. In spite of himself, Bren glowed with pride. If Master Ikithon, one of the most important people in the whole of the Empire, thought he would make something of himself then he couldn't let him down.)

Oh how different his life would have been if only he hadn’t gone out apple picking with little Gisela from a few doors down.
But well, there was no turning back time after all.
And really, it was all for the best if he was honest, after all, those other two families were gone now, and if that wasn't a warning, he didn't know what was. So instead he decided to enjoy the little things in life.-

Mr. Sol called the people Caleb was staying with and told them about Zadash High’s “Behavioral Correction Program”. And Caleb left.It had only been a month since he’d left rehab and come to this school, and he was already being recommended for a troubled kid's group. So, overall, he was off to a shining start."
In which Caleb has a lot of trauma to work through, the Mighty Nein is A Lot To Handle (tm), and Caleb's parents are lowkey my favorite characters.
The first work in a shamelessly self indulgent, stupidly elaborate High School AU. Basically, the Mighty Nein are shoved into an after school program together. Slow burn bonding, angst, and probably cuddling to follow.

Slipping around the others as they enter the room, bringing it alive with conversation and greetings, Essek and Caleb meet halfway, clasping one another in a tight, long-desired hug. “Oh, my darling,” Essek sighs as he melts into Caleb’s embrace, “How good it is to see you again.”
“And you, liebling,” Caleb breathes. Essek feels him bite back a sob, and holds him tighter, ever aware of stray eyes that may wander in their direction. This is as much affection as Essek is willing to display in front of the others: indeed they’ve hugged many times, even before they became as close as they are now. But between the two of them, Caleb has always been far freer with his affections. Essek, for all that he cares for Caleb, still has reservations of being so open in his affection the way Beau and Yasha or Jester and Fjord are. A hug is something they can let the others see.
The rest can wait until they’re alone. But knowing the Nein, that won’t be for several hours, as dinner and long conversation will surely be on the agenda for the evening.
It’s alright, Essek thinks as he squeezes Caleb tighter to him, unwilling to let go even for a moment. Essek is a patient man.
