At first, Armand looks furious. He opens his mouth a fraction, his eyes flickering, raising one hand in a graceful arc. There’s already a flame in his palm, and Sam’s instinctive response is to meet Armand’s gesture with the same, to show him that he’s not the only one who wields the Fire Gift. Armand glances at the flame in Sam’s hand and then at Sam’s face, tilting his head. He closes his hand, extinguishing the fire.
Sam closes his own hand, shaking from head to foot. “We’ve both broken curfew.”
Armand bites his lip, giving a slow, reluctant nod. “Yes, it would seem we have.”

Or, Diego Armando is poisoned in the courthouse basement cafeteria on August 27, 2013, and falls into a coma from which there's little hope he'll ever wake.
Somewhere along the line, he ends up being okay with that.
(In which immortality is an inevitability, the children have all been left to fend for themselves, and Diego submits to the mortifying ordeal of being known.)

It so happens that the room he’s staying in is right next to a comatose patient - Diego Armando. Because of this, Phoenix ends up entering his dreams every time he falls asleep and the two slowly bond with each other over time within the dream realm.
