In the second chapter, after Ken identifies the man in a line-up, the man seeks revenge. He escapes and kidnaps Ken again. He rapes and tortures him. In the concluding chapter, Barbie comforts Ken. Stiles is just trying to prevent the next supernatural problem from gracing their doorstep. Derek is just trying to keep his pack alive (and ignore the desperation that crawls under his skin whenever Stiles is near).
When Stiles goes into the preserve to investigate a string of murders, he and Derek are kidnapped by an unknown group and locked in a basement with no escape. Each night brings new suffering and torture, and each day they have only each other.
