“Mydei. Mydei, it’s me. Phainon!”
At that, Mydei’s lip curled from its frown into the slightest, lazy smile and hope sparked in Phainon’s chest. Of course Mydei would recognise him even like this. So long as Mydei knew the truth, he could contact Cipher or Anaxa and surely their individual specialisations would be able to—
“You are a noisy one, aren’t you?” Mydei teased.
Ah. That was a bit of an issue. Mydei didn’t recognise him after all. That was fine. A minor setback really. Phainon had overcome worse odds before. He could do it again! Even in the body of a chimera.
Through a bit of Zagreus’ trickery attached to a mirror, Phainon takes on the appearance of a chimera and spends the day with Mydei. Despite how humiliating it is, Phainon is relieved that no one can understand him and figure out his true identity while he waits to return to normal.
After all, only people who receive a blessing of Cerces can understand chimera speech. And no one else. Right?

He stared at the long, endless road ahead of him and couldn’t bring himself to look behind him. He had heard that voice too often in those four million and one cycles only to find they were nothing but delusions—of course. Of course. What else could they have been? What else could it be now? How could it be anything but his fractured mind trying to conjure some comfort he didn’t deserve in his final moments—
“You sure took your time getting here. Now you can’t even find bring yourself to face me?”
After four million and one cycles, the very first Phainon finally passes the mantle of Khaslana onto the next Phainon. The Coreflames had both ravaged and sustained his body, and without them he crumbles to ash. When Amphoreus itself is a lie, the gentle West Wind and Sea of Flowers must be as well. So, that should be the end of his pitiful existence.
Instead, he wakes up in a library—Irontomb’s data archive of previous cycles. And there he reunites with the very first Mydei.

Mydei seemed to sense it too. His eyes darkened, his hand slowly coming up to touch the side of Phainon’s face, his thumb brushing lightly over his jaw. The touch was so gentle it almost didn’t feel real, like a dream slipping through his fingers, but it was real. And it sent a shiver down Phainon’s spine.
“I think,” Mydei murmured, his voice thick with something darker now, “that you’ve been holding back far too long.”

The village hero had turned pink at that point, quickly looking back and forth as he tried to figure out how best to define his budding relationship with his companion.

Mydei had groaned, giving Phainon a light slap on the back before turning to her, speaking plainly.

The prince lifts a judgmental eyebrow and stares at the bloody ground they’re standing on. "Here?"
"Yes. I know it's not exactly romantic but I really want to kiss you right now, Mydeimos." Phainon pleads and nuzzles their noses together again.
It's hard to deny his Deliverer anything. So he doesn't.

Because oh.
