Summary
After returning from Afghanistan Buck and Eddie move to LA to put down roots and in the process build the family they deserve, not the ones they were born with.

“What are you doing here?” Buck asked, “I thought you were going to station six?”
Eddie had that shit eating grin he got whenever he was being a cheeky bastard, “Last minute change of plans.” He gave a faux nonchalant shrug.
Suddenly Buck’s face fell into a suspicious glare, “You’re not fucking with me, are you? Rocking up to tease me with those abs of yours and then fucking off to your actual station?”
Eddie’s smile turned fond, enough confirmation that this was for real, “No, I’m here for good.”
“Good, I’ll introduce you then.” Eddie followed Buck as he led him back to the small group, “Everyone this is Eddie Diaz, Eddie this is Hen, Bobby and Chimney.”
“I didn’t realise you two knew each other.” Bobby said, analysing the two of them.
Eddie and Buck began to laugh in unison, “Know each other?” Buck said, speaking through the laugh.
“We share a mortgage.” Eddie finished for him.

Summary
Buck had been a professional stringer for three years now, becoming a nocturnal creature who spent his nights whizzing around LA in his Jeep, trying to get as much footage of disasters and emergencies as possible to sell to the news networks of LA.
Stringing was an extremely competitive job, multiple people out on the roads trying to get the perfect shot and sending it off first.
But he loved it, loved the rush of racing his competitors, being on the scenes of emergencies, surrounded by the noise and the adrenaline fuelled energy, whilst having to maintain an artistic eye under pressure so he could frame it perfectly.
And Buck was good, he was really good.

Buck works as a stringer, a freelance videographer who spends his nights filming accidents and emergencies to sell to LAs news stations. Unfortunately he's madly in love with one of the firefighters who works at a firehouse he's gotten to know particularly well.

Unable to pull Buck out of the depressive fog Eddie's leaving triggered, Bobby and Athena sneak him aboard The Odyssey, a luxury cruise ship, in the hopes that causing a little bit of mischief will help cheer him up.

Eddie laughed loudly, “Now, you going on an accidental cruise I get, but Athena and Bobby? That’s not what I expected. But, hey, at least it’s Athena dealing with the heist this time and not you getting framed for it.”
“Excuse me, you also got framed, don’t pin that all on me.”

“Uh, I got called in to meet with Chief Alonzo this morning.”
Eddie’s eyes widened, “Shit, is everything okay? What happened?”
“Uh, yeah, yeah, everything’s okay.” Buck scratched the back of his neck awkwardly, “I, uh, well, he was saying that he doesn’t want to rush into picking a new Captain,” Buck sniffled and wiped his eyes as a tears began to dribble down his face, “You know, Bobby was-” His breath hitched, he pushed through a sob to keep talking, “He was special and he needs to find a Captain that fits the environment he’s built. But until then he needs an acting Captain-” He dropped his head into his hands as his body was wracked with sobs.
“Who’d he pick?”
Buck raised his head to look at him, face red and blotchy, “Me.”
or: Bobby told Buck that his team would need him, so when he's appointed acting Captain of the 118 Buck does his best to hold it together because his people needed him to be strong, no matter the personal cost.

When Eddie, Buck and Chimney's Hotshots episode airs the fandom goes wild. Unfortunately for Chris he's extremely involved in aforementioned fandom and ends up stuck watching everyone ship his Dad and Buck.

“So on the credits they’re down as Nurse One, Nurse Two and Doctor, but the actors are credited as Evan Buckley, Edmundo Diaz and Howie Han, so for ease I’m just gonna use their actors names for them, but honestly guys, I think we have some new ships on our hands. I mean Nurse Edmundo and Nurse Evan are totally married, and like I know Race is married to Anisha, you know I’m a FireCop shipper till the day I die, but I could totally see something happening between him and Doctor Han.” Ew, ew, ew, no way he didn’t want to think about Chimney and Race Banner together, FireCop were so perfect he couldn’t think of either of them with anyone else, especially when one of those people was a man he saw as family.
But the whole his Dad and Buck thing? As weird as it was hearing them being referred to as ‘Edmundo’ and ‘Evan’ and being spoken about like were just characters, they did have a point.

His thumb shakes and it takes him a couple of tries before he finally answers the call, just as its about to send Eddie to voicemail.
“Hey, man. What's up?”
Buck tries to make his voice sound calmed and unbothered, casual— and he thinks he mostly succeeds if the paramedics' annoyed and unamused stares are anything to go by.
“Hey, Buck. Are you busy right now?” Eddie's voice sounds strained and has an edge to it, that immediately has Buck frowning with worry and concern.
“Uh,” Buck looks down at his exposed abdomen where blood is still, even if slow and thin, gushing out of his wound. The skin around it looking red and… not good at all. “Nah, man. I'm not doing anything."
