    Spider-Man is here, standing just a few feet in front of him, and Miles thinks he’s pretty justified in wanting to freak out, because this is officially the coolest day of his life.

    “Dude!” He says (definitely not in a squeal, Miles does not squeal). “Oh my god! What- what are you doing here?!”

    Spider-Man lets out a little laugh (he just laughed at something Miles said, oh god). “What do you think? I’ve come to check you out!”

    “Me?” He asks, in a hopeful - and perhaps just a tiny bit desperate - tone.

    “Well, yeah! It’s not every day there’s a new Spider-Man in New York, you know!”

    Jefferson Davis can’t lie to himself, as much as he tries. He and Miles have always butted heads-- his son just has this carefree, unfettered approach to life that Davis' strict, no-nonsense methods seemingly have no place in. A large part of him loves Miles for that, truly, even though sometimes Jefferson feels as if he's just slowing him down.

    But now, with Miles away at school on weeknights-- seemingly always busy with something or another-- Jefferson has never felt that gaping space between himself and his son yawn wider.

    Enter the new Spider-Man. A free-spirited kid, five foot nothing and standing between the whole city and danger as if it’s his job, breaking a long series of minor laws with careless ease, and giving a certain cop heart palpitations on a regular basis.

    Jefferson Davis can’t lie to himself anymore. No matter how much he hates vigilantes-- especially of the masked variety-- a child is a child. And a dad is a dad.

    The work kept him sort of fed, clothed, and able to buy some first-aid supplies. Rent was out of the question (not that he could sign a lease, being underage and without ID), so he’d found a condemned abandoned building to squat in. No power, no hot water and structurally unsound, but it was out of the rain and he had a stray cat as a roommate, so it was fine.

    Peter was fine. Hungry, cold, and alone, but fine. The fact that his new home was not in Queens but instead was ever-so-slightly over the border in Hell’s Kitchen was a tad bit concerning, but that was fine, too. He just made sure not to do any Spider-Manning near Daredevil’s territory to avoid drawing the Devil’s attention.
