but that anxiety rose up in his mind once again. Because what if he failed? he couldn't help but think. Instead of instinctively shirking away from that fear, he embraced it, letting shock and disbelief run rampant across his face. After all, he had no idea who was watching. It had to look genuine. “You're shittin’ me…” he mumbled, still staring at the screen. It wasn't until his phone vibrated in his pocket that he allowed a small smile of victory to cross his face. He didn't even need to look at it to know what Futaba had sent. Their plan had worked. Ryuji grimaced as he remembered the large, dark mass of purple splayed across his friend's chest, a testimony to multiple cracked ribs. Ren's face was flushed and sweat poured off of his body, even as he shivered violently with fever. His eyes slid open halfway, glazed with delirium. They moved slowly, wandering to the side until they landed on Ryuji and the rest of their friends. “No… more…” He rasped, fear flickering across his expression. His lungs creaked as he wheezed for breath, hands scrabbling for purchase on the mattress to push himself away even in his weakened state. “P-please…” Ryuji couldn't think. He acted on instinct, gently but firmly holding Ren down as he struggled. Panicked voices buzzed around him, but Ryuji could barely hear anything over his heartbeat thudding in his ears. A voice cut through: “Here's the sedative from Dr. Takemi,” Makoto said as she approached. They'd had to ask the doctor specifically for needles of sedative instead of pills and, seeing how hysterically Ren was acting, Ryuji knew they'd made the right call. If they tried to make him swallow something, he'd probably choke on it. It still sent a wave of nausea through his body as Ren's eyes focused on the needle in Makoto's hand, pupils shrunk to pinpricks.They descended the inoperative escalators, Thief costumes appearing in plumes of blue fire as they reached the mouth of Mementos. Ryuji's brow furrowed as his familiar pirate outfit and skull mask refused to appear. He clutched at his own shirt in disbelief as his civilian clothes remained. Trying to calm himself, he looked inward, searching for the familiar rumble of Seiten Taisei’s voice in his soul, but found no answer. “Skull?” Ann's voice finally reached him, and he looked up to see his friends all staring at him. “I… I don't…” He faltered, trying to answer her unspoken question, but finding it impossible when he didn't know the answer. Futaba tapped the side of her goggles, lenses glowing as she scanned him. “Ryuji, what happened to your Persona?” she gasped. He felt empty, impossibly empty where before the soothing presence of Seiten Taisei had comforted him. Blinking back the tears prickling the backs of his eyes, Ryuji turned on his heel and ran back up the escalator. Footsteps rang behind him, but Ryuji wasn't the (former) star of the track team for nothing. He poured on the speed, bursting above ground, whipping out his phone and exiting Mementos in record time. As reality bled back into focus around him, Ryuji ducked back underground, doing his best to blend in with the crowd as he entered a random train and took off. Finally satisfied that he'd lost anyone who tried to follow him, Ryuji allowed himself to relax, rubbing his face with a hand as he tried to forget the looks of concern and pity of his teammates. He hated it, hated letting his teammates down. His tears came back with a vengeance as guilt threatened to drown him. He grit his teeth in anger, wishing he was alone so he could scream. Why do I screw everything up?!Ren's vision darkened at the implications. Even in the Velvet Room, he wasn't allowed to release all his Personas. Igor had said it was due to the “risks” it posed to him. Ren didn't want to think about what that meant for Ryuji now. He swallowed thickly as he muttered to no one in particular “I need a moment”, walking towards his glowing cell door.“The Chariot's Persona fled due to his soul’s instability,” Igor said. “In order to return his soul to its previous state, you must enter it and fix it from the inside.” “‘Enter it…’,” Ren echoed thoughtfully before he surged forward again. As he gripped the bars of the cage, the chains linking his shackles clanged against the metal, adding to the ringing in his ears. He ignored it, a fire in his chest burning with the need to help his best friend. “He has a Palace!” He exclaimed. Justine sniffed. “It took you far too long to realize that, Inmate.”That's not true!” He declared. “I moved into the Kosei dormitories!” A sad smile was the Cognition's only response as he continued to breathe in the heated oxygen. He finally pulled it away from his face. “You never told Ryuji about that.”

By the time he turned his head, it was already too late. Nothing but white filled his vision as everything seemed to spin violently around him.
Great. Their one job was to not get hit by that bastard’s quirk, and yet Bakugou had done exactly that.
“Word has it that he can manipulate timelines, but we don’t know how exactly. I cannot stress this enough: be careful.”
So much for that. Though, what did they think was gonna happen? That Bakugou wouldn’t rush headfirst into a fight? Yeah right.
The air was forced from his lungs as he collided harshly with the linoleum bathroom floor. Where the hell was he? Two seconds ago, he’d been in the middle of a villain fight downtown. Somebody gasped in the corner, and Bakugou was immediately on his feet and alert, searching for whoever made the sound.
The last thing he expected was to lock eyes with Deku, except it wasn’t his Deku. No, he was standing across from a younger version of the man, who still wore the Aldera uniform.
