It’s just not feasible. Phil's soldiers are outnumbered. His allies are hesitant, unhelpful. He cannot fuel the proper war that will bring them out on top, that will finally bring the bloody conquest to a close. His people will be slaughtered. His crown will be stolen. He will be another name to the growing list of fallen rulers.
But a sword raised on the battlefield is not the only way to take care of a threat. Phil knows there’s plenty of other ways to secure victory, or at the very least, push off defeat for another week longer.
The moment the conqueror’s forces come within range, Phil sends an invitation.
He invites the conqueror to lunch.
(Or, AU with king!Phil and conqueror!Techno being enemies, then friends, then family. It is a very calculated plot, until it's not.)

Unbeknownst to most people of Inazuma, Thoma hadn’t miraculously learned how to become a caregiver once he crash-landed there. Sure, it was more work than he was used to, but he had been caring for others since he was twelve and his mother's hands shook too much to make her favorite soup, so he learned how just for her—the same way he had learned how to balance just right on the stool so he could clean the nooks and crannies his mother couldn’t get anymore, the same way he had learned to keep blankets in the sun so that they would be warm when his mother needed them. He had adapted, just as he always did.

Summary
Ayato is approaching his twenty-eighth year, the state of emergency in Inazuma has finally calmed to a manageable level, Thoma is overseas. The public has turned its eye to the Kamisato clan’s head. He is not young anymore. There is no crisis that needs his constant attention, there is no war. There is no excuse for Ayato to ignore the steadily rising pressure for him to marry.

Ayato sends Thoma on a trade negotiations mission to Mondstat during Windblume in his stead, so he won’t be in Inazuma while Ayato is attempting to organize his own political marriage. Thoma reconciles his past with his present as the festive season makes him consider love and freedom, while Ayato wrestles with his duties and his conflicting personal happiness.
At the same time, several disconnected scenes from their childhood— going from the day they met to the present, details the growth of their relationship and how they got to where they are now.
