They’d been in the city for five days. Another cold case: two women, years apart, same stretch of highway, nothing linking them except the shape of their disappearances. Local police had almost written them off. Briggs hadn’t. Which was how Michael and Dean ended up in a motel off I-83 with leaky plumbing and a heater that let out a smoker cough when you turned it on.
Dean sat cross legged on the bed, a case file spread open across his lap, brows drawn together in concentration. Michael had been watching him read for nearly half an hour. He was pretending to do the same, a file in his hand and his eyes elsewhere.
