I owed her a proper letter, I didn’t write enough, but what could I say. It seemed like everyone else wrote so much more than me, but they probably had more people to write to than just their mom. Every time I tried to tell her what happened with Anne, what the trenches were like, how desperately I had to hold myself together, the agony I was always in, why should she know, what was the point. I never could figure out if it was kind or cruel that demons could never have demonic parents, my mom’s humanity meaning she would never know how it was, and sometimes, like now, I wouldn’t tell her if I could. I like being her invincible daughter, like no other succubus, how happy she was when I convinced her I would survive this, and I would, but she didn’t need to know how, but I couldn't lie. My letter told her I was alive, not sick or injured, that I miss my home, I miss her, that I love her. It was what I could manage, so it had to be enough, she would understand.

Life has never been safe for a Borrower in a world governed by humans. It’s not that Alex was uncomfortable with being bisexual. It really, really wasn’t. It’s just… Greg was his first proper same-sex partner. His first ‘gay’ relationship. And he hadn’t ever before been very active in local queer spaces. He had felt as though because he was married to a woman and had kids with her, he didn’t really belong there. That he was not, well, queer enough to be accepted, he thought.
Alex re-examines what being queer means to him, confronts some internalised biphobia, and attends his first ever pride march with Greg. He finds community, learns more about himself and Greg, and finds joy in the pain.

更新了一个系列正文的中土 AU。

及系列正文没写完的部分。
系列虽然沿袭原作，是类爱泼斯坦岛背景，但是因为我写的时候无论如何无法想象原作描述的机构如何合理存在于一个原作所暗示的、高度类似当代现实的世界，所以系列 boss 不反映现实的爱泼斯坦岛 boss，而是按照“写原作/拿原作手冲、且否认描述了与现实同名的政治与其他实体的原作有现实影射的人，以及造成了这种人的环境”来塑造。因此我在正文模糊了大量实体的名字与特征，主要是在元小说《水银峰》才开始 cue 它们。
我一方面确定系列的一些政治内容在我看来足够写意，一方面很遗憾自己虽然没有像原作一样颠倒黑白指鹿为马扭曲历史，但对历史上的真实事件仅处在蹭热度的层面。所以在考虑一个新的类爱泼斯坦岛背景，以纠正原作与我对这个背景本身的 abuse。

Viktor shined regardless, but imagine how much brighter he could shine if he were to, say, have Jayce’s body.

Summary

When faced with something new, the first thing a person does is try to fit into a pre-existing paradigm. They associate the new discovery with something they already know, giving one's self guidelines to how to handle the new thing. While often mostly harmless, this can do a huge disservice to the thing just discovered. They may have to exclude parts of this new thing to fit it into the paradigm. They could also try to expand the paradigm to fully encompass the new discovery, but that can only go so far. Sometimes, you just have to accept that the discovery and the paradigm are incompatible, and start a new one.
With both the Director and the Queen dead, Ambrosius is put in charge of rebuilding the Institute. Nimona is praised as being a Hero, although still supposedly dead. Ballister has been reinstated as a knight, and can often be found helping Ambrosius with his new duties when he's not with Nimona. Outside of them, though, the Kingdom is still in disarray, and uncertainty festers around every corner. It doesn't help that corruption built up over centuries is impossible to simply wipe away. These three Heroes will still have to battle against — and perhaps with — what remains of the Kingdom before.
