Chosen began to preen them, fixing each feather carefully as he did. He dug his talons into the very roots to unsheathe the pin feathers from the base, shredding the hard, grey-blue tubes with deft ministrations. It felt like peeling bark, or scraping dry paint. However, when the soft fluff of the feathers underneath revealed themselves, bright crimson instead of the usual dirty maroon, it made up for the unpleasant sensations entirely.
