Mike draws his eyebrows together, frowning at both the wrinkles in his forehead and the lines around his mouth when William's hands slip for an agonizing moment as he screws him now into something unsightly.
His face turns red with anger, with helplessness at the realization that he couldn't fully defend himself. He could feel William caress his face with his free hand, rubbing his thumb first under Mike's teary eye, then over his busted lower lip. He moves closer, only inches separating them, and feels a twinge of satisfaction at the scrapes along Mike's cheek and jaw.
"Relax," growls William, impatiently, as Mike hisses some insult in response without heeding him. Their difference in constitutions is one thing, but Mike is literally at a disadvantageous position; his heart pounding furiously against his rib cage.

Summary
When Stede Bonnet left a life on land to sail the seas as The Gentleman Pirate, he thought he would figure out his true calling. He never expected that rescuing a strange, gray-bearded mercreature covered in tattoos and healing scars would be the thing to give him direction. In discovering who the merman is, he discovers parts of himself he'd kept hidden, and that maybe their lives really aren't so different, after all. They're both looking for the same thing: a person to see past all the trauma and who truly sees them. Ed is like something from Stede's wildest dreams, and Stede is willing to risk breaking the rules society has put on both of them in order to find a new place for them, all while they define what their relationship looks like.
And if he can figure that all out, maybe Stede isn't such a bad pirate after all.

He feels vindicated and wild and angry and petrified, but a cool sort of relief flows through him at the conclusion that settles within him.
This will end with one of them dead.
Distantly, in the back of his brain, he hears Dream’s voice, echoing.
"You’re all bark and no bite, kid."
He was wrong.
He took Tommy’s air, and his lungs, and his tongue and his teeth, and made sure he didn’t have anything left to craft his words with.
Tommy doesn’t have any bark at all.
Not anymore, at least.
He’ll let Dream decide whether or not he’s got any bite.
