Molly arced a brow. “Perhaps the beginning would suffice.” She hadn't meant it to be funny. She hadn't meant it to be anything at all, but the miserable laugh that broke from her daughter's tight lips made her wince. Then.

The words draped over her, smothered whatever she had thought Monika might say. When they registered, they dug at something deep within her, and the hairline fractures in the box of memories buried in her chest split wider, her conscious mind rushing into the displacement and mingling within things she never meant to remember.
Maybe it was her lack of response that prompted it, or maybe the soul-deep exhaustion was simply catching up with Monika again, but she tipped sideways, head falling into Molly's lap as she curled in on herself. “I'm sorry,” she choked out again, the tears erupting from her eyes as if they'd never truly stopped. They flowed over the crook of her nose, dripped down her cheek and into the duvet cover across Molly's thighs, darkening the fabric with salt.
