      Buck looked at him for a second, not sure what to say. He didn't know what to say. It was impossible to pretend that he hadn't heard the cold, freezing tone in which his best friend had replied to his question. Why was he so upset? Was it just the long day or was something more behind that attitude? Was he upset at him, had he done anything to upset him?

      After that, they both fell quiet again. Buck was staring straight ahead while Eddie seemed to find great interest in the couch material.

      "I should leave", Buck concluded after a few minutes of them just sitting there in silence. That's probably what his friend needed anyway. He had only wanted quiet and Buck had pushed himself onto him, had made it sound like a good idea to spend the night together. But that was complete bullshit. He should've driven him to the apartment and left again.

      "What? What? No, what are you talking about, why do you wanna leave?"

      Buck scoffed, standing up. "We're not even talking Eddie. I should've just left you alone."

      "But you know I prefer your company!"

      "Do you?"

      "Don't be silly, of course, I do. You're Buck, I will always prefer your company over loneliness."

      The tone of his voice sounds genuine. not dismissive at all which is exactly what throws Buck off.

      "Then why aren't we talking?", he shot back.

      Eddie paused for a second to look at him. Really look at him. He hadn't done that in months.

      "Can't friends just be quiet around each other once in a while Buck?"

      Buck winced at that word. Friends, they hadn't really been friends in weeks.

      The silence in between calls told that, the avoidance of direct eye contact showed that. Sure, Eddie had forgiven him for the lawsuit, had "moved on" but the unspoken words still lingered between them. They didn't spend their weekends together anymore, they barely even stayed in touch.

      "Are we still friends?"

      "What?", Eddie stood up now too, trying to level with his friend.

      "Eddie, are we still friends?", Buck repeated his question, now meeting Eddie's eyes properly, for the first time all day.

      No question, Eddie was taken aback by that question. Immediately he wanted to protest, to insist that they were friends, because of course they were. They had been friends for so long and he had forgiven him for the lawsuit weeks ago, how could Buck still question that? Then again, he didn't know if they really were.

      He had obviously also noticed how they had been growing apart. They didn't spend time together outside of shifts or other get together. Neither of them even tried to stay in contact with the other one, they just slowly drifted towards other people.

      Buck had Maddie, to his knowledge she was the one person he spent the most time with. And Eddie had Hen. It was easy with her, especially because Denny and Chris got along quite well, despite their big age gap.

      It was much harder to pretend that he didn't miss Buck though. Every weekend, when Christoper urged him to get Buck to come over, he had to tell his son that he was busy and couldn't make it that day. That guilt alone had been eating him up over the past few days.

      Instead of following the rules of "Yes or No" questions, he went for another option. He had to know what Buck thought.

      "Evan do you think we are friends?"

      Buck looked away again. He shrugged, not knowing what to say.

      "Can we even be friends, after all, we've been through Eddie? I mean we have all that stuff happen to us and then we don't talk about it, we never even mention it. Instead, we grow apart, start to actively avoid each other. I'm not putting one of us at fault, I've been doing it as much as you have and I'm really starting to get sick of this whole ordeal."

      A silence settled between them again and Eddie knows it's his turn to talk now. He doesn't know what to say though. Every word, every argument sounds so silly in his head. He hated that he has no idea how to salvage this, he used to always know.

      "Buck, I would like to be your friend but I also don't know if we are at the moment, friends I mean. And I agree, I am sick of this too. So what do you say, you sit back down and we talk? Like proper adults, that are trying to be friends."

      He smiles at the suggestion and it doesn't even take a minute for him to sit back down. And for the next hour, he ignores the butterflies, building up in his stomach, whoever Eddie looks at him in a certain way or their hands brush against each other briefly. It's not easy but it's nothing he hadn't done before.

    This is a compilation of all the pieces that take place within my Over-City/Under-City AU, which is also a Hot Guy/Cute Guy Superhero AU, though that's not the only thing that'll be going on! I plan to keep this series in chronological order, so I'll put all the pieces where they'd fall along the timeline, which may sometimes not line up with the publishing date. The exception to this is 'Pretty Boy' which, IF someone does want to read the whole series in order, I'd want them to have read that one first and then all the rest, so 'Pretty Boy' will always be the first fic in the line-up, but after that you could read chronologically or just bounce around as you please! I've written all of these to mostly stand-alone, so you shouldn't be too terribly confused no matter where you decide to start up!
